We have some exciting news to share as Communities In Schools of Washington celebrates 35 years of showing up for students and families across our state. 💙

Dr. Gwynth R. Nelson’s title has been updated to CEO and State Executive Director of Communities In Schools of Washington.

This updated title recognizes the full scope of Gwynth’s leadership and the support she provides to our statewide network.

Over the past year, Gwynth has traveled across Washington, connecting with affiliate leaders, staff, Site Coordinators, board members, partners, and communities while helping strengthen the relationships and opportunities that move our mission forward.

We’re grateful for her leadership and her commitment to ensuring students across Washington are surrounded by a community of support.

A day of connection, learning, and looking ahead. 💙

Last week, CISWA board members and staff gathered in Seattle for our 2026 Board Retreat. Together, we spent the day strengthening relationships, learning more about what effective board leadership looks like, hearing updates on important work happening across our statewide network, and building new skills to help more people connect with and support our mission.

We’re so thankful for a board that is willing to learn, connect, and actively show up for students across Washington! We're also grateful to Boston Consulting Group for hosting us for the day -- thank you!

We left with new ideas, stronger connections, and plenty of momentum for the year ahead.

Every day a student makes it through the school doors is another opportunity to learn, build confidence, strengthen friendships, and connect with caring adults who believe in their future.

But sometimes, showing up isn’t easy.

Transportation challenges. Housing instability. Health concerns. Family responsibilities. Food insecurity. A student may be carrying barriers that aren’t visible when we simply look at an attendance record.

That’s why Communities In Schools of Washington supports a statewide CIS network working alongside students, families, schools, and community partners to help remove those barriers and surround young people with the support they need to succeed. 💙

For 35 years, our mission has been rooted in a simple but powerful idea: show up for students.

Across the Communities In Schools of Washington network, there are still several opportunities to help provide students and families with the resources they need to start—and stay—strong this school year.

Coming up across Washington:

🎒 September 11 | Washington State Fair Supply Drive

Support students with much-needed school supplies through CIS of Lakewood.

🧡 Through October 15 | Ready, Set, Thrive! Basic Needs Drive

Help CIS of Whatcom-Skagit provide students with essential items that help remove barriers to learning.

🌲 November 1–December 1 | Giving Trees

Join CIS of North Central Washington in making the holiday season a little brighter for local students and families.

Whether you donate supplies, contribute to a drive, volunteer your time, or simply help spread the word, every act of support helps surround students with a community of people who care.
