Join PSFS for a discussion with Professor Robert Murrett on Monday 2/20 at 4:00PM in 209.
We'll be talking about the how the nation's financial distress is impacting military preparedness and initiatives around the world.
The discussion will be geared toward a farily general audience, so no specialized background in federal budgeting or defense is necessary.
Check out the Defense Budget Priorities document (the full document is 15 pages, check out the first 4 if you don't have much time) for an excellent primer:http://www.defense.gov/news/Defense_Budget_Priorities.pdf
If you find you want more on defense priorities and strategy also check out:
http://www.defense.gov/news/Defense_Strategic_Guidance.pdf
This document is about 10 pages long and provides (as the name suggests) strategic guidance summarized in the Defense Budget Priorities document

We hope to engage policy students more fully on the issue of public debt by providing a variety of expert views and policy options.
Due to the complexity and politicization of the problem, many young people struggle to understand the debate surrounding the consequences of our growing public debt and the challenge of implementing appropriate solutions.
Today at 4:30 follow this link https://webconference.syr.edu/r47943876/ to our collaborative forum on the debt and deficit with Len Burman and other policy schools.

Save the date: next Tuesday at 4:30 PM join PSFS and Professor Len Burman for a webinar highlighting the greatest challenges for our younger generations and hear an overview of upcoming PSFS events!

Nice to see a major state public finance publication run an accessible column discussing the pros and cons (primarily cons in my opinion) of tax expenditures. http://www.governing.com/columns/public-finance/story-behind-tax-expenditures.html
The Story Behind Tax Expenditures They're the hottest topic in budget-balancing and deficit-cutting circles. They are also the least understood and the most controversial.
Stocks sink after S&P issues warning on US debt - BusinessWeek Stocks are sharply lower after Standard & Poor's issued a warning on U.S. government debt. Fears about Europe's debt problems are also pushing markets lower.
