We studied Aliki this week. After a field trip to visit the Cranbrook Institute of Science and reading Fossils Tell of Long Ago (2x) by Aliki, we made our own fossils.

What kind of den? Science class.

Discovering a potential coyote den was my inroad to literacy this week. When your are active and outdoorsy and , you go outside and bring the learning back in with you. We now have trail cams at the den site and imagine what fodder for writing that will provide. We write about things that interest us. If your writer is reticent to stick it out through the writing process, perhaps they need a more inspired topic. As a quick check, see how much they like talking about the subject. After all, writing is talk written down.

After insects we studied birds. One of them decided to nest right in our tree adjacent to the front door. A Robin. This was especially sweet if you know my daughter lost a good school friend by that same name about a year ago. We made a book, went birdwatching, observed the nestlings, and visited a nature center. If You live in Michigan you don’t ever need to buy science curriculum!
