had other ideas. We will be staging a massive Birthday Drive-By of Mr. Dorsey's home in Frederick on Sunday, November 15, 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. If you would like to wish Mr. Dorsey well, please email Pat Greenwald for his address: [email protected]

THE BIG 99th IS ALMOST HERE!!!

Join us on Sunday, November 17, to wish Warren Dorsey a happy 99th birthday. His long journey began right within the walls of the Schoolhouse and that is where we will celebrate from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. There will be cake, laughter, and, no doubt a story and song or two from the guest of honor!
No charge, just a chance to celebrate an important piece of Sykesville's history!

Is your family trying to get that last visit for the Howard County "Passport to the Past" or Carroll County's "Summer Adventure?" Then come to the Schoolhouse at 2:00 p.m. on Friday! We will start with a quick tour of the little one-room Schoolhouse, then sit up front for a look at our local butterflies and learn how to attract them to our gardens. We will move to the craft tables to make two butterflies to take home, and enjoy a snack while the paint is drying. Not doing the "Passport" or the "Adventure?" You are still invited to take a peak at a bit of Sykeville's history.

No charge, just fun in yesteryear for today's learners!

It is with sadness that we mourn one of our Schoolhouse icons, Mrs. Carolyn Baugh Dorsey. She was by his side each time her husband, Warren, and his sisters Mae and Rosie shared memories of their days in their old school with our visitors. Warren is always encouraged to sing, and whenever he sang a love song to Carolyn, every visitor's eyes teared up. All of us will carry Carolyn in our hearts, remembering her gentleness, kindness, and warmth.

It's time for another Open House at the Historic Sykesville Schoolhouse! The school bell will ring at 2:00 this Sunday, March 17. Kids (and their adults!) will begin by painting a terra-cotta flower pot. As the pots dry, they will learn something of the magic of seeds. After filling their pots with soil, they will select a few flower seeds to plant. Follow-up instructions will be handed out.
Refreshments! A peek at the Schoolhouse! Fun!
(But, as always, no charge!)
We hope to see you Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at 524 Schoolhouse Road, Sykesville!

The native birds of the greater Sykesville area are pleased to announce that the weather will cooperate this Sunday, January 27. Families are invited to the Historic Sykesville Colored Schoolhouse to learn about our local feathered friends, then to create five bird treats to bring home to help the birds through the bad weather which is bound to come.
2:00 - 4:00 p.m. Refreshments. No charge, just fun!

SNOW! Lot's of snow! Unfortunately the kids won't be able to get to the Schoolhouse to help our feathered friends through the storm. Today's "It's for the Birds" event is postponed until January 27, when it will NOT snow! See you then!

Things will be a-twitter at the Schoolhouse this Sunday, January 13, from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. Families are invited to our "It's for the Birds" Open House. We will begin at 2:00 with a brief presentation on our local feathered friends and why and how to feed them over the winter months. Then kids will move to the craft tables to prepare a variety of treats for our wild birds. They will take their creations home to hang on a handy branch in their own yards...then watch to see who enjoys the treats.

Refreshments. Fun. Learning. But never a charge!

From Main Street Sykesville, turn north on Oklahoma. Pass the Post Office and the French Twist and continue up the hill. Watch for a small sign with a flower attached to it. The sign will point you left on to Schoolhouse Road. The Schoolhouse is the first building on the right. Due to County construction, the Road is a mess. Park along the Road. Once inside the Schoolhouse, you can step back to yesteryear and forget the construction outside!
