One of the great things about coaching, mentoring and leadership is having the opportunity to help someone get their foot in the door.

A college opportunity.

An introduction.

A job interview.

A chance to compete.

A conversation with someone who can help them.

Those opportunities matter.

But I’m increasingly convinced our responsibility can’t stop there.

Because eventually, we’re not going to be standing beside them.

They need to know how to introduce themselves.

How to communicate.

How to ask good questions.

How to follow up.

How to handle disappointment.

How to treat people.

How to recognize an opportunity—and then do something with it.

I’ve spent a lot of my life trying to help young people get opportunities through baseball.

Today, I think just as much about whether we’re preparing them for what happens after the door opens.

That’s development.

Not doing everything for someone.

Preparing them to eventually do it without you.

Open doors when you can.
Then teach people how to walk through them.

One of the things young athletes sometimes don’t realize is how often their name comes up when they aren’t there.

A college coach calls another coach.

A scout asks about a player.

An employer checks a reference.

Someone asks:

“What kind of person is he?”
“Can we depend on her?”
“Would you want them on your team?”

And usually, the answer isn’t based on one great performance.

It’s built from hundreds of small interactions.

Were you on time?

Did you work?

How did you treat teammates?

How did you respond when you weren’t playing?

Did you make excuses?

Could people trust you?

Did you make the people around you better?

I’ve spent a lot of years in baseball, recruiting and leadership, and I’ve learned something pretty simple:

Talent may get your name into the conversation.
Character often determines what gets said when you’re not there.

So build something worth talking about.

Not because you’re trying to impress people.

Because that’s who you’ve decided to become.

THE DAYS NOBODY CELEBRATES.

Everybody sees the big moments.

The championship.
The scholarship.
The promotion.
The opportunity.
The breakthrough.

What they usually don’t see are the hundreds of ordinary days that made those moments possible.

The early mornings.

The extra repetitions.

The difficult conversations.

The mistakes nobody posted about.

The days you weren’t very motivated—but showed up anyway.

The small improvements that didn’t feel like improvements at the time.

I’ve spent a lot of years around athletes, coaches and leaders, and I’m increasingly convinced that most growth happens when nobody is applauding.

That’s true in sports.

It’s true in leadership.

And it’s certainly true in life.

Don’t underestimate an ordinary Monday.

Keep working.
Keep learning.
Keep showing up.

Those days are building something.

BE SOMEONE WORTH FOLLOWING.

Leadership isn’t a title.

It isn’t being the loudest person in the room.

And it certainly isn’t having all the answers.

Leadership shows up in the little things.

How you treat people who can do nothing for you.

Whether you keep your word.

How you respond when things don’t go your way.

Whether you’re willing to serve instead of always being served.

And what you do when nobody is keeping score.

In sports, we spend a lot of time developing skills.

I believe we have an even greater opportunity:

Develop people who others will want to follow.

Not because they demand it.

Because they’ve earned it.

Through character.
Consistency.
Humility.
Service.
Trust.

Long after the games are over, those things still matter.

Develop the athlete. Build the person.

Leadership Thought — Trust the Next Step

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how much energy we spend worrying about things that haven’t happened yet.

What if this doesn’t work?

What if I make the wrong decision?

What if the plan changes?

What if something I’ve worked hard to build doesn’t turn out the way I hoped?

I’ve certainly asked those questions.

But at this stage of my life, I can also look backward and see something I couldn’t always see while I was going through it.

Some of the things I worried about the most eventually led me exactly where I needed to go.

Not always where I wanted to go.

Not always according to my timetable.

And certainly not without some difficult days along the way.

But somehow, God has continued to put people, opportunities, lessons—and occasionally closed doors—in my path that I understand much better looking backward than I did walking through them.

I think there’s a leadership lesson in that.

Leadership doesn’t require knowing exactly how everything is going to work out.

Sometimes leadership is simply having enough faith to take the next step when you can’t see five steps ahead.

Prepare the best you can.

Do the right thing.

Treat people right.

Control what you can control.

Learn when things don’t go your way.

And then keep moving.

There are things in my own life right now where I don’t know exactly what the next chapter looks like.

And maybe I’m finally learning that I don’t have to.

I just need to be faithful with the chapter I’m in.

Maybe somebody else needs that reminder today too:

You don’t have to see the entire road to trust the next step.

Keep going.

WHO YOU BECOME MATTERS MORE THAN WHAT YOU ACHIEVE.

Sports can teach us a lot about winning.

How to compete.

How to prepare.

How to respond under pressure.

How to chase a goal.

But over the years, I’ve come to believe the greatest value of sports isn’t always found on the scoreboard.

It’s found in who we become along the way.

Did we learn how to handle failure?

Did we become better teammates?

Did we learn to communicate?

Did we learn to work when nobody was watching?

Did we become dependable?

Did we learn to serve others?

The trophies eventually collect dust.

The statistics fade.

But character follows us into every relationship, every job, every opportunity, and every room we walk into.

That’s why developing athletes has never just been about making them better players.

It’s about helping them become better people.

Develop the athlete. Build the person.
