Midwifery Wisdom Collective Midwifery Wisdom Collective is a multifaceted resource for birth professionals.

Advanced midwifery skill is necessary for today's independent out-of-hospital midwife. Midwife's statistics are being tracked, home and birth center births are on the rise and safe outcomes are everyone's priority. It is a delicate balance to know when to utilize all your midwifery skill to get a baby born AND when to effect transport quickly. With hands-on skills training and an opportunity to explore case studies , you will come away with an extensive new skills set: better able to serve your clientele and better able to discern the path to good outcomes.

This is Dr. Ricardo Jones. A pioneer of birth humanization in Brazil. A man who helped open doors so many of us could remember that birth belongs to women.

Today, at 65 years old, he is unjustly imprisoned; a victim of systemic persecution. His wife, an obstetric nurse, is under house arrest.

The video I’m reacting to was filmed in 1990. In it, Dr. Ricardo offers something rare: humility.

He tells a story from earlier in his career, when he was still shaped by medical arrogance and ignorance around normal birth. He describes his shock when a woman gave birth squatting, on the floor, without his help.

And then he says something unforgettable:
“I realized that if I had not arrived in time, that could have been a wonderful birth.”
That moment says everything.

It speaks to the truth that birth does not need to be controlled to be safe. That women’s bodies carry ancient intelligence. That medicine must learn when to step back.

I was also interviewed in a different documentary he took part in, after I gave birth squatting at UNICAMP hospital in 1989, a birth considered shocking at the time, and still seen as radical today.

What was once visionary is now criminalized. What was once called humanization is now treated as a threat.
This video serves as a memory and a warning. It is a call to protect those who dared to trust women.
