The Problem: A Series

White Supremacy is alive and well today. However, it doesn’t always look like the Ku Klux Klan, Neo-Nazis, or Confederate Flags. Due to the history of our country, White Supremacy has been normalized and exists in almost every institution, especially in our educational institutions.

White Supremacy is when Ancient Civilizations in Latin America are characterized as barbaric but genocidal colonizers aren’t. White Supremacy is when we frame Thanksgiving as peaceful gathering instead of a massacre. White Supremacy is when students are taught George Washington’s dentures were made out of wood instead of the teeth of enslaved peoples. White Supremacy is when we praise the ‘legacy’ of Thomas Jefferson instead addressing him as a slave owner participating in the largest human trafficking ring in history. White Supremacy is when you exclude Black Wall Street and The Tulsa Race Massacre from your curriculum. White Supremacy is when all the of the materials in a classroom are written and edited by white authors. White Supremacy is when we police black and brown students by white standards.

The Problem: A Series

We all carry implicit bias. However, it is our responsibility to educate ourselves and take action to challenge these biases and change. Implicit Biases not only result in discipline disparities amongst black and brown students, they also result in a lack of investment in these students, their potential, and their goals as well.

How can we grow together towards a better future if we are ingraining these biases in students for generations? How can educational institutions say they foster the greatest minds of the future when that is only true for students who are white or benefit from white privilege?

Microaggressions take place on the bus, in the hallways, in the cafeteria, and in the classrooms of our schools at the expense of our Black and brown students. How are environments plagued with racism considered suitable for learning and growth? It’s time to do the work and take action.
