On March 14th-16th the Wizard of Oz Youth Edition hit the CMS stage like a tornado! The production was praised by many as “the best middle school play they have ever seen”. The talented cast and crew teams were directed and led by:

Last week, our students were able to participate in and watch a great performance by Junk 2 Funk by Trashcan Lid Productions! Here is some feedback from our students who watched and participated.

The experience at Junk 2 funk by Trashcan Lid Productions and Jeff Erwin was great! I thought it was cool how they took ordinary objects, like water bottles and frying pans, and made music with it. The music was good and the energy was even better. I liked the rain thing we did with snapping and clapping. and the dancing at the end was really fun! 10/10 I would love to go again.

Junk 2 Funk (Feb,15,2024) is a middle school concert. It was led by Jeff Erwin of Trashcan Lid Productions. It was a great concert with cool music. One of my favorite parts was at the end when Cowen did the guitar solo. Everyone did a great job at the concert. There were multiple acts where people from the play pretended to be the audience and then when it was their turn to play they got up and ran to the stage. overall it was a great concert.

Since I'm in percussion class, I asked to participate in Junk 2 Funk. It was an interesting experience, and although sometimes not really my thing, I'm glad I was in it. I was pretty nervous the first performance in front of a good chunk of the school, but the second time I did it my nerves were less prominent because of the smaller population watching. It was overall a cool thing to participate in.

Hello, I am Jacob Houde from team 12 telling you about the Junk 2 Funk Performance. Jeff Erwin led the electrifying experience of Junk 2 Funk and was lively and well-performed. I enjoyed seeing my peers and classmates performing amazing songs. The concert was well put together and I enjoyed it very much.

While I was watching Junk 2 Funk, I was amazed. There were students from all different grades, and they were playing music on things considered junk. They made groovy tunes and made the whole audience start dancing along. It was impressive that the students made that good of a beat on j***y instruments. It was awesome.

Bryce Cottrill - Grade 8

"In Mrs. Swanson’s flex, we learned about stocks, taxes, car ownership, home ownership, credit cards, job resume creation, and more. These topics were really helpful to me because I’ve always wondered why we don’t learn how to do these things at a younger age. This class is also a lot different than the other flexes. The work is a lot more independent and challenging which prepares us for high school. My favorite thing that we did was the stocks lesson. Learning about how they work and why they exist was really interesting, and it made me feel like I actually learned something important that I could use in the future, much like all the other lessons that we covered."

"Ms. Swanson’s Personal Finance Flex taught me lots about saving, purchasing credit cards, paying/filing taxes, and so much more that I will be able to use in the future. I thought it was fun and very informative about how to take care of your money. The skills I learned are going to help me so much in the future."

"This flex was helpful because it prepared me for things I need to do in the future. It taught me how to make a resume, how to build credit, car insurance and more. It taught me how these various things can benefit me and how to handle them. This class was advanced and a bit challenging but worth it. My personal favorite was when we got to pick a car and write about it. I liked it because it helped me learn more about my favorite car and if it is worth it to buy. Hopefully everyone will benefit from this flex and learn more about financial work. “

The most important part of growing up is learning the life skills you will need when you're older, and this flex taught me just that."

Future City Competition 2024

On Saturday, January 20th, our Future City Club had an exciting opportunity to showcase their innovative projects at the New England Future City competition at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston.

Our CMS middle school students began their journey toward the Future City competition months ago. They spent countless hours researching, planning, and designing a scaled model of their future city, incorporating innovative technologies and sustainable practices.

The Future City competition is a platform where students are encouraged to apply STEM principles to design and build a city of the future. This hands-on educational program challenges students to plan and create a model of a sustainable city, taking into account various factors such as energy consumption, waste management, transportation systems, and public health. It allows young minds to demonstrate their creativity, teamwork, and critical thinking skills.

Although our school's Future City Club teams did not emerge as the winners of the competition, the experience itself was incredibly valuable and received four different awards. (The Most Futuristic, The Best Waste Management, Most Innovative Recycled Material Use, and Most Innovative Concept). The journey allowed the students to acquire a wealth of knowledge and skills that will undoubtedly benefit them in the future. They honed their teamwork abilities, problem-solving techniques, and creative thinking.

It was truly impressive to witness our CMS student's creativity and critical thinking skills in action. The New England Future City competition was an invaluable experience for our CMS middle school's Future City Club.
