UConn Service Learning

Our Story

Service Learning Initiatives have been prevalent since the inception of the University of Connecticut. Service Learning is about connecting community based projects to a well aligned course at the University. Service Learning utilizes the intellectual and personnel capital at the University to engage with the public and identify how UConn and the community can benefit from one another mutually and in a sustainable manner.

Through the efforts of the Forum the University applied for and received the elective “Community Engagement” classification from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in 2010.

In January 2015, the Foundation announced that the designation would be extended to 2020.

The Office of Service Learning Initiatives guide, coordinate, advocate and build capacity for all facets of Service Learning and engagement at the University: research, scholarship, community based learning, civic and community engagement in sustainable and meaningful ways.
