Most of the time, the male moth emerges out of the cocoon first..they are smaller bodied. Once a female appears, the pheromones trigger the males to get into a mating frenzy. They will stay joined for several hours. There are tricks to separating them, but is not necessary. They will part on their own and the female will start to lay eggs immediately.

Some silkworms are already spinning. We prefer using a paperbox or paper rolls. Why? because it will absorb excess moisture. If you use a plastic tray, the silk will take too long to dry, and will tend to stick together. Once it sticks, it gets much harder to separate out the thin thread. This is one of the differences in raising silk technique. Doing it right will give you grade A quality silk. Do it wrong, you will get very little quantity and poor quality silk.
