Amazing to see a leg of a hawk's migration path...

We went from tracking eight broadwings last week to 18 this week‼️

A few returning favorites joined the kettle including Billings and Stuart, along with a very recent addition - Flynn. Flynn, a juvenile broadwing, was captured at Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory's banding station this past Saturday, 19 September. We are excited to track another juvenile on its first migration!

From west of the Great Lakes, Brewer is leading the way and currently migrating through Iowa.

Of the Canadian nesting broadwings, Hugger and Minden are out in front and currently passing through southern Illinois and Kentucky.

Potts is ahead of the other east coast birds and already in northern Georgia, but Morgan, Ridge and Moose are not far behind.

Almost 158,000 birds flew across Ulster County last night. Wow!! Have you seen Cornell's Birdcast "Migration Dashboard"? I can't help but imagine each bird as a molecule of sorts in a much larger movement across air, land, and sea. Amazing... https://dashboard.birdcast.org/region/US-NY-111

When I first learned tracking, I thought it was about animals.

Then I thought it was about awareness.

Years later, I realized it was about relationship.

Every track asks a question:

Can you pay attention closely enough to enter another being's world?

That same question changed my meditation practice.
My mentoring,
my work...
my life.

The deepest skills often arrive disguised as something else.

What has a completely different lesson than the one you originally thought you were learning?

"Need drives results." A mentoring principle that the Tracker, Tom Brown, Jr. often shared. This week the need here was create a new fire making kit. Here's what happened, and what I learned along the way. https://open.substack.com/pub/earthmystic/p/right-place-right-time-the-art-of?r=6j44zr&utm_campaign=post-expanded-share&utm_medium=web
