Commuters and people working from home are an increasingly important part of the San Joaquin County economy, according to a report prepared for the San Joaquin Council of Governments (SJCOG).

About 87,900 county residents commuted outside the county for work in 2024, including about 61,000 traveling to the San Francisco Bay Area. Workers from nearby counties traveling into San Joaquin County for work increased by 44 percent since 2015.

What does that mean in dollars? Net imported earnings grew from $5.4 billion in 2019 to an inflation adjusted $7.4 billion in 2024, increasing from 12.5 percent of total personal income to 14.3 percent.

Work-from-home rates more than doubled following the COVID-19 pandemic, from 4.1 percent of workers in 2015-2019 to 10.6 percent in 2020-24. The higher rates were concentrated among professional, managerial and higher-income workers, especially from Mountain House, Tracy and Lathrop.
