She wrote me:

“I would love to share the powerful experience of the vaginal birth of my first child in breech presentation — more specifically, a footling breech birth.

Even before my pregnancy, I knew that I had a uterine septum. During the pregnancy, my baby turned into breech position and would no longer turn back. Although ultrasounds had consistently shown her in a complete breech position, on the day of birth she rotated around her own axis and brought one foot down. (Earlier in the pregnancy, I had already felt a foot low down, so I am not entirely sure whether the ultrasound assessment may have been inaccurate.)

From the first contraction to her arrival, the entire birth lasted only five hours, and I was incredibly well supported by the obstetric team throughout. She was born weighing 3880 grams, even though the ultrasound estimates had suggested she would be much smaller. Thankfully, I did not suffer any severe birth injuries.

I am deeply grateful that I was able to have this experience, and at the same time deeply saddened for all the women who are not given this opportunity. I feel for all the babies who are made to feel “wrong” even though they are exactly as they are meant to be. I am saddened by the loss of knowledge surrounding breech birth, and at the same time so happy that my daughter was able to be born into my arms that day in a self-determined and peaceful way.

Thank you for this platform and for the people who continue to advocate for keeping vaginal breech birth a safe and supported option.”

And just like the ballerina that so beautiful and precisely maneuvers to execute their turns, your baby does too.

When we back off, and leave the baby to be, we can see the beautiful turns and choreography your baby will perform.

Your baby is a natural ballerina and they’ve been waiting a long time to show you their natural skills.

Birth is a song and dance.

You sing your birth song while your baby dances.

Every birth has their own song and dance.

No 2 are exactly the same.

We cannot help birth when we expect them all to play the same song and dance the same dance.

All songs and dances are beautiful when you just listen and watch.

Keeping your hands to yourself is a skill that is not regularly taught in medical industrial complex. This skill is one that centers trust in the process and the knowledge that most births don’t actually need help. That intervening carries risk. The help that is often best is staying out of the way. Want to know who your provider is? Ask them how many hands-off births they’ve attended in their career.

There is an estimated 54% decrease of fetal heart rate abnormalities when the parent is an upright position. Given this huge number, it’s abusive and criminal for systems to continue to create poor outcomes by forcing parents to use the lithotomy position.

Babies are incredibly built to be born. They are knowledgeable in how to be born. It’s just us adults with our big thinking brains that get in the way.

Birth can be a place of delectation.

Birth can be a place where your pain is power.

Birth can be a place where contractions are invited and not feared.

Birth can be a place where beauty reveals itself when you completely surrender to the process.

Birth can be a place where you find yourself.

Birth can be a place of complete transformation.

Birth can be a place of your biggest achievement.

Birth can be a place where all your inhibitions run free and wild.

Birth can be a place where you know your baby is almost here, and suddenly, a smile dances across your face.

Darling, birth is the opportunity for everything.

When we or**sm, we tend to relax the mouth, jaw and lean our head back. ⬅️ this can be directly applied to birth. The relaxed jaw impacts the pelvic floor, cervix and tissues. This is how we can more easily surrender to the birth and baby. Allowing the uterus to powerfully contract and being available for the baby to just move through us.

Yes, babies practice breathing before they’re born. 🤯

This baby was born en caul during a cesarean, still enclosed in the amniotic sac.

Watch closely at the nose.

What you’re seeing are fetal breathing movements. Before birth, babies aren’t breathing oxygen through their lungs. Their oxygen is supplied through the placenta and umbilical cord, while their lungs remain fluid-filled.

But babies rehearse the movements they’ll need after birth.

Their diaphragm and chest make rhythmic breathing movements, and fluid can move through their airways.

These movements are an important part of lung development and preparation for life outside the womb.

Then birth happens, the placenta continues oxygenating baby during the transition, fluid begins clearing from the lungs, and those practice movements become something entirely new.

They become the first breaths of air. 🫁✨
