Mary Anning (1799-1847) Fossil hunter. Paleontologist.
Mary began fossil hunting with her family near their home on the seaside cliffs of the English Channel. Her family relied on the income that came with selling these found fossils to scholars and collectors. Mary was self taught in geology, anatomy, paleontology, and scientific illustration. At the age of 12, she and her brother Joseph discovered the 1st known Ichthyosaur, and Mary extracted it herself. Later in 1824, she found the 1st intact plesiosaur skeleton. After much skepticism of her finding, it was finally, and this began the turning point for Mary and her family. The scientific community began to acknowledge and value her discoveries. She went on to work for the British Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Geological Society of London. In 1847, Mary died of breast cancer. She is recognized as 1 of the 10 most influential women scientists in British history.
Mary's other discoveries include skeletons of the pterosaurs and the squaloraja, and many others that she was never properly given credit for discovering.

Madam C.J. Walker (1867-1919)
Entrepreneur. Philanthropist. Activist.
Born Sarah Breedlove on a plantation in Louisiana, to enslaved parents, she was one of six children. She rose from poverty and became the "1st Black Woman millionaire in America" through her development, manufacturing, and sales of hair care products for African American women.
An advocate of black women's economic independence, she created a sales force of black women to sell her products. She employed 40,000 black women and men in the U.S., Central America, and the Caribbean. She advocated for the end of lynching, and for the education of African American students. She founded the National Negro Cosmetics Manufacturers Association in 1917. Her generous contributions also supported the YMCA, various charities, and full paid tuition to African American students. In the end, Madam C.J. Walker donated two thirds of her wealth to these efforts. Her products can still be found today exclusively at Sephora.

It's Women's History Month, and I wanted to take time to acknowledge some of the amazing women in history from around the world. Starting with Olha Kobylianska of Ukraine πΊπ¦
Olha Kobylianska (1863-1942) was a self educated Ukrainian modernist writer and feminist. As an author, her work portrayed the challenges that intellectual Ukrainians of her generation faced. She was a leader in the feminist movement, and was of the 1st to embrace feminist ideas in her writing. She supported women's emancipation, and ideas that centered around strong, independent, and educated females. This included the right for personal sexual fulfillment regardless of gender preference. It was all to be embraced β€
Some of her well known novels include:
Zemlya (Land, 1902), and V nedilyn rano zilliakopala (On Sunday Mornings She Gathered Herbs, 1909)

Painting and adorning retired ballet shoes isn't completely different from making jewelry. These were made for Centennial State Ballet's 2021 Nutcracker season. The shoes were given to me to transform into Nutcracker inspired themes and characters, and will be sold at the performances with 100% of sale going to CSB. The company is performing the last show today. The talent in this youth ballet company is extraordinary. If you're looking for a holiday experience, grab tickets to see in person, or livestream! βππππππΌβ€

The 'Pink Moon' lunar phenomenon signifies the time we embrace spring, spiritually it's a time of rebirth and reflection. It's the biggest and brightest moon of the year, shining brightly on the earth and encouraging the early springtime blooms of the moss pink wild ground phlox in the US and Canada.
I'll be reveling in this time of rebirth and reflection - a perfect night to make moon water. How will you celebrate this full moon?
