Why do patters repeat even when we try so hard to be aware and conscious? Maybe patterns repeat because of the reactions we have, the boundaries we postpone, the truths we soften, or the parts of ourselves we leave outside the relationship.
This isn’t about blaming ourselves for how other people behave. Other people are still responsible for who they are, what they choose, and how they treat us.
But radical responsibility asks a different question:
Who am I becoming in the presence of this relationship?
Do I speak early, or wait until resentment has built?
Do I tell the truth, or become more accommodating in order to preserve connection?
Do I trust that the right relationship can withstand my honesty, my needs, my boundaries, my brightness?
Because sometimes we can change the face in front of us and still recreate a familiar relationship if we keep bringing the same unconscious survival strategy with us.
Not because we are attracting punishment.
Not because someone else’s harmful behavior is our fault.
But because what we repeatedly silence, tolerate, or negotiate away can shape what a relationship becomes.
Maybe the deeper healing isn’t simply learning to choose different people (although sometimes yes that too).
Maybe it is learning to stay fully ourselves while we are choosing them.
