CHANGING THE NARRATIVE: The camera angle.
This week, as I was watching the Olympics, I couldn’t stop thinking about the optics felt between the gold and the silver medalists.
In the overall scheme of things, same medal.
Two completely different emotions.
One athlete is sobbing and trembling with joy.
Another looks absolutely crushed.
Not because silver means something different, but because the story around THEIR silver is different.
One expected gold, or it was a bust.
One never expected they would even make the podium.
That’s the “camera angle” problem. The world sees a finish. The athlete feels the gap between expectation and reality.
College admissions works the same way.
Two Kappa Leaguers can get the exact same outcome and experience in totally opposite ways... One Kappa Leaguer feels proud and relieved. The other feels like they “fell short,” because they were projected somewhere else, or because a friend got “the better one,” or because the narrative was written before the decision came in.
Kappa Leaguers:
If you’re sitting with disappointment, it doesn’t mean you’re ungrateful. It means you cared.
But here’s the real question... Are you measuring yourself against your goals, or against someone else’s forecast?
Because those are NOT the same thing.
A forecast is what other people expected of you.
A goal is what you worked toward, what you chose, and what you controlled.
Forecasts are LOUD. (Rankings, acceptance rates, “where everyone else is going,” what your school tends to produce, what people assumed would happen.)
Goals are quieter. They live in the daily decisions: the class you stuck with even when it was hard, the teacher you asked for help, the essay you rewrote five times, the way you showed up when nobody was clapping. When a decision comes back, it’s easy to let the forecast become the scoreboard. To treat anything short of the predicted outcome as failure.
But the forecast was NEVER the assignment.
The assignment was growth. Follow-through. Learning who you are.
Building and creating options for yourself. Finding a place where you can thrive.
Parents:
Like I always say, "Your Kappa Leaguer CAN handle disappointment. What they can’t handle is disappointing YOU."
So if they’re grieving an outcome, help them separate the two:
“I didn’t get what I wanted” is painful.
“I wasn’t enough” is heavier.
And “I let my parents down” can linger for years.
If you’re a Kappa Leaguer reading this, I’ll leave you with this:
Don’t let someone else’s prediction rewrite the meaning of your work.
Are you measuring yourself against your goals… or someone else’s forecast?
YOU GOT THIS!
