Lifting As We Climb: How Black Faculty Make Professional and Linguistic Choices to Thrive in Higher Education offers a powerful exploration of how Black faculty navigate language, identity, belonging, and professional success within academic institutions.

Led by co-authors Kendra Calhoun, Aris Clemons, Joy Peltier, Kahdeidra Monét Martin, Ph.D., and Anne Harper Charity Hudley. This book, drawing on years of research and personal narratives, examines the linguistic choices Black faculty make, the challenges they encounter, and the ways they build community, mentor others, and create pathways for future generations. It's a timely contribution to ongoing conversations about equity, inclusion, and institutional change in higher education. Special thanks to all of the lab members who contributed to this special project!

We're also grateful to Marcie Geffner for her thoughtful review of the book, which highlights its insights into the often-unseen labor Black faculty undertake as they navigate academia.

The Black Academic Development Lab at Stanford University, Anne H. Charity Hudley, Ph.D., PI, seeks to hire a postdoctoral fellow in the language, literacy, and culture of African Americans. The appointment is scheduled to begin on September 15, 2025; a later start date may also be possible. The position is renewable for a second year, contingent on satisfactory performance.
