Appetite for Change is a Stanford student group that promotes education and dialogue about how the food we eat - particularly meat and animal products - relates to larger global issues such as the state of the environment, public health, workers' rights, and more. We strive to start conversations with students about how food ties into interests they already have. Instead, we encourage critical tho

"Earlier in the day, a group of guys had wandered into the 4,000 square foot eatery, Rachel said, and told their counter server that they hadn’t known – and were slightly horrified to learn – that the place was vegetarian. They were regular Burger King customers. Yet after being promised they could have free red bean-rice-cheddar burritos if they didn’t like the burgers, they acquiesced.

No burritos were given away, Rachel added."

"Torture a single chicken and you risk arrest. Scald hundreds of thousands, and you’re an industrialist. That's my conclusion after watching an undercover video of a chicken slaughterhouse. Read my column--but not while you're eating chicken," writes Op-Ed columnist Nicholas Kristof

Most Americans don’t want animals killed for food to suffer needlessly. Yet that’s exactly what happens to hundreds of thousands of chickens every year.

"Here then, is your two-step guide for an unassailably powerful personal food policy.

1. Stop eating junk and hyperprocessed food. This eliminates probably 80 percent of the stuff that is being sold as “food.”
2. Eat more plants than you did yesterday, or last year."

Not all food waste is created equal: "If you throw out some arugula at a fancy restaurant in upstate New York, it doesn't have much impact on the world's food system...But throwing out a small steak has a huge impact — maybe more than all the arugula in the restaurant put together."

http://www.npr.org/blogs/goatsandsoda/2014/07/17/332058497/if-you-eat-your-leftovers-people-who-are-hungry-will-benefit

Americans throw out a lot of food. And a lot of meat. That means our waste has a bigger impact on the global food supply than vegetarian discards. Why? Blame it on hidden calories.

What's the real cost of that $3 burger?

Interesting piece on food choices and masculinity.

"Mainstream masculinity is a roadblock to sustainability," he says, adding that since he stopped eating or using products that hurt animals, he's occasionally been made to feel unmanly. "It's considered a sign of weakness to other men — like you've left the club."

http://www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/2014/07/21/332329709/for-these-vegans-masculinity-means-protecting-the-planet

A group of men in New York are challenging the stereotype that eating meat signifies manliness. Instead, they say that manhood can be proven by caring for the planet, not dominating it.
