Early Saturday morning, we were joined by a wonderful group of people for a gorgeous morning on Long Island Sound for a Mindfulness Sail. These sails offer peaceful, contemplative time on Long Island Sound - an escape from the noise and distractions of daily life and a reminder of our deep connection with each other and all the residents of the natural world.
This sail’s highlights included beautiful light, a serenade from a pair of Loons, and a rare visit from three harbor seals.

How do you wake a sleeping schooner? Lots of People and Lots of Elbow Grease!
After bearing the load of 8,000 students and adults from April-October last year, the Schooner SoundWaters rested on dry land from November-March, but it was anything but a restful sleep. Our maritime team, aided by our Harbor Corps trainees, crawled over, on, under and through the entire ship, sanding, painting, tightening and fixing this beautiful vessel so it would be ready to go for 8,000 more people this season. They built new deck boxes and even installed new sails! She is ready to go.

SoundWaters connects people to the Sound in many ways, like science, sailing, art and mindfulness, but Shakespeare? This week, students from a UConn Stamford English class used The Tempest as their bridge to the natural world. Currently studying this classic piece, they spent their afternoon in the salt marsh on Stamford Harbor interacting with animals as a way to connect with the maritime environment of the play and understand their personal relationship with their local environment as members of the community.
We love this! Bravo UConn Professor Debapriya Sarkar.👏
