Q: My child says they hate school every morning. What should I do?
A: Start with curiosity instead of correction. Ask what feels hard, not just academically, but socially and emotionally. School refusal is often a signal that something deeper needs attention.

We are excited to announce that families now have a new, convenient way to support both their child's academic success and their own wellness. Through a new collaboration between Miriam School and Learning Center and the Gateway Region YMCA, YMCA members can now enroll their children in fee-based, specialized tutoring services offered by Miriam at the South County and Chesterfield YMCA locations.

Students in grades K–12 can receive one-on-one tutoring or participate in small-group reading instruction focused on reading, writing, math, and executive functioning. Instruction is tailored to each child's unique learning needs using evidence-based approaches. Q: When should I be concerned that my child isn't reading like their classmates?
A: Every child develops differently, but persistent struggles with letter sounds, decoding, fluency, or reading confidence deserve attention. Early intervention can make a tremendous difference.

Q: My child is smart. Why is homework such a battle?

A: Intelligence and executive functioning are actually two entirely different things. A child can easily understand the material but still really struggle with organization, planning, staying focused, or getting started. The good news is that these are skills that can be taught with the right support.
