Our Macoupin CEO team visited WSMI Radio, where Shawn Balint gave a candid look at how local radio continues to serve its community in a changing media landscape. One of the clearest takeaways was how essential radio remains for rural listeners, especially farmers. In tractor cabs out in the fields, Wi-Fi is nonexistent and cell reception is often spotty, but a radio signal comes through reliably.

Shawn was also honest about the business pressures facing radio today. Music royalties are a significant ongoing expense, while advertising revenue has struggled to keep pace as listeners shift toward Sirius XM, music apps, and podcasts. WSMI has adapted by leaning into what national platforms can't replicate: local news, hometown sporting events, and community information. And turning on the radio takes no effort, whereas apps require scrolling through playlists, choosing podcasts, and managing a connection.

The visit was a strong lesson in knowing your market, understanding your unique value, and adapting your business model when the industry around you changes.

DISC day! Today the team reviewed their disc profiles and why it matters - especially if they disagree and need to be professional (and not make it personal!).

Specifically, relating to sponsors, vendors, customers, and even each other requires other-awareness (not just self-awareness).

Today’s favorite illustration? Writing the instructions to making a PB&J. Taken literally, the sandwich making was more entertaining than productive!

CEO day 26: A Visit to the The Cubby Hole

Paul Boente and Jason Kessinger gave a tour of The Cubby Hole. Paul shared how Dale and Nancy started the business after Dale filled concession machines at surround schools and people asked, “what about shirts?” So if you get asked enough times you eventually decide it’s a worthwhile business! That was 1985.

Today The Cubby Hole is a regional name for personalized branded apparel. Today’s lessons included:

Systems and processes: staffing and training to raw materials (shirts) to prints to imprinting to purchase orders and invoicing to quality control and shipping.

Biggest lessons included reliable service, great customer service above all else a quality product at a competitive price. Jason elaborated, “we can’t always beat on price, but we will never give up on quality and customer service.”

Paul also explained the value in valuing their employees. “When we succeed they succeed. We are all in this [business] together.”

Letties Nuñez, my mom, came in and shared her journey coming from Cuba then to Spain, to Romania, then throughout South America and finally the US. She found herself in Standard City where she raises me and my siblings and has made a new start flipping houses. She shared with us the importance of perseverance and how she arrived to where she is today. Her story is inspiring and completely changes the way our team sees the world. Additionally we had the pleasure to have Siri Engstrom here and translate for my mom. -Melanie Vasu Nuñez

CEO Day 17: With JT and Central Machining in Carlinville!

JT explored the business of part creation for big companies who don’t want to invest their time and resources in machining parts in house. So they outsource to companies like Central Machining.

Today’s visit introduced vertical integration and revisited systems for scaling, margins, quality control, and marketing that includes knowing your target market, your competition, and your capacity (you can’t promise a part you can’t deliver)!
