Final verses of "Kindness" by Naomi Shihab Nye

Before you know kindness as the deepest thing inside,
you must know sorrow as the other deepest thing.
You must wake up with sorrow.
You must speak to it till your voice
catches the thread of all sorrows
and you see the size of the cloth.

Then it is only kindness that makes sense anymore,
only kindness that ties your shoes
and sends you out into the day to mail letters and purchase bread,
only kindness that raises its head
from the crowd of the world to say
it is I you have been looking for,
and then goes with you everywhere
like a shadow or a friend.

Excited to be giving my 'Women and Perfectionism: The Wholehearted Journey to "I am Imperfect & I am Enough"' workshop via Zoom for the Brown School's Professional Development program on Friday, November 6, 2020 at 8:30-11:30am CST.

For more information and to register, visit https://bit.ly/37mdy3p.

P.S. This is a great chance to participate if you live outside of St. Louis since this program is not usually held virtually! Calling my fellow recovering perfectionists! My favorite of Brené Brown's books - The Gifts of Imperfection - was re-released today in a 10th anniversary edition, alongside (free!) new tools and resources. Check them out here! https://brenebrown.com/thegifts-hub/

I will likely be creating a *virtual* group in coming weeks/months to dig deeper into the Gifts of Imperfection. If you're interested in learning more, please email me at [email protected] to connect.

I am profoundly grateful to have spent the last five Thursdays with this tremendous group of leaders who are all now officially Dare to Lead™ Trained! Congratulations ThriveCo Dare to Lead™ Spring 2020 Cohort!

And a big thank you to ThriveCo co-founder Katie Silversmith for wanting to create this experience for your community so that we could make this happen together :)

A nugget of beauty for your day. Even if you only have a few minutes, the first few of this recording are worth listening to.

What You Missed That Day You Were Absent from Fourth Grade
By Brad Aaron Mifflin

Mrs. Nelson explained how to stand still and listen
to the wind, how to find meaning in pumping gas,

how peeling potatoes can be a form of prayer. She took questions on how not to feel lost in the dark.

After lunch she distributed worksheets
that covered ways to remember your grandfather’s

voice. Then the class discussed falling asleep
without feeling you had forgotten to do something else—

something important—and how to believe
the house you wake in is your home. This prompted

Mrs. Nelson to draw a chalkboard diagram detailing
how to chant the Psalms during cigarette breaks,

and how not to squirm for sound when your own thoughts
are all you hear; also, that you have enough.

The English lesson was that I am
is a complete sentence.

And just before the afternoon bell, she made the math equation look easy. The one that proves that hundreds of questions,

and feeling cold, and all those nights spent looking
for whatever it was you lost, and one person

add up to something.

On Brad Aaron Modlin’s “What You Missed That Day You Were Absent from Fourth Grade” and learning to grow up by yourself.
