Twenty-six hundred years ago, Greek sailors planted vines along the exact coastline this ship sails.
Around 600 BC they founded Massalia, the city we now call Marseille. In the same century they founded Emporion, on the Catalan coast near Palamós. They were not even the first to work this coast. Etruscan traders were already moving w**e from Tuscan hills to that same shore.
Three of the world's most familiar w**es grew from those ancient plantings: the rosé of Provence, Chianti, and cava. Most people drink all three without ever learning they share one coastline and one origin story.
Over the next six posts I am going to tell the story of a trip the way it deserves to be told: the three w**es and why they belong in the same week, the one port day that forces a real choice, the 2,600-year thread underneath the itinerary, what the fare actually covers, and who this sailing fits.
Tomorrow: the three w**es, and the ancient trade route that connects them.
