There are two measures on the Missouri ballot this election that would increase the to***co tax in Missouri: Proposition A and Amendment 3 (“Raise Your Hand for Kids”).
To***co Free St. Louis does not support either of these initiatives. We would support an initiative that includes the following elements, which are crucial for making a significant public health and economic impact:
• An increase in the price of to***co products that is immediate, not incremental
• Free of funding from to***co industries
• Tax increases should be significant (A $1.00 increase in Missouri’s cigarette tax would prevent approximately 58,700 youth from smoking and, over five years, save an estimated $22.53 million in lung cancer, heart attack, and stroke costs.)
• Tax increases should apply to all to***co products equally, not just ci******es
• Tax revenue should be directed toward public health goals (to***co education and cessation)
