The ACT has changed a LOT—and here are the actual numbers most people aren’t seeing.
📊 OLD ACT vs NEW ACT (2025+)
ENGLISH
• Old: 75 questions / 45 minutes (~36 sec per question)
• New: 50 questions / 35 minutes (~42 sec per question)
👉 That’s 25 fewer questions
👉 Roughly 6 extra seconds per question
---
MATH
• Old: 60 questions / 60 minutes (60 sec per question)
• New: 45 questions / 50 minutes (~67 sec per question)
👉 15 fewer questions
👉 More time per question + only 4 answer choices instead of 5
---
READING
• Old: 40 questions / 35 minutes (~52 sec per question)
• New: 36 questions / 40 minutes (~67 sec per question)
👉 4 fewer questions
👉 Big jump in time per question (+~15 seconds)
---
SCIENCE
• Old: REQUIRED (40 questions / 35 minutes)
• New: OPTIONAL (40 questions / 40 minutes)
👉 And it no longer counts toward the composite score
---
📉 OVERALL TEST
• Old: ~215 questions
• New: 171 questions (or just 131 without science)
👉 That’s 44 fewer questions overall
---
💡 What does this actually mean?
Yes, students have more time.
BUT…
With fewer questions:
➡️ Each mistake counts more
➡️ There’s less room to “make up” points
➡️ Accuracy matters more than ever
And one subtle change most people miss:
👉 In English, instead of 5 passages with 15 questions each, the new test mixes shorter passages (some only ~5 questions)
👉 In Reading, fewer total questions means effectively less margin for error per passage
---
📌 Bottom line:
The ACT didn’t really get easier—it just shifted from a speed test → to an accuracy test
That’s a big difference.
And it’s why some students feel better taking it… but aren’t necessarily scoring higher.

Feedback from today's ACT - English - moderately difficult, math moderately difficult, reading on the easier side except for the last passage (this may be the one they toss)
