Educational testing can feel like a maze for families.

In this episode of Forget What You Learned, we sit down with educational psychologist Jana Parker to unpack what testing actually means for students and how parents and schools can better navigate the process.

We discuss:
• The differences between various types of evaluations
• The role schools, clinicians, and pediatricians play in assessments
• How diagnoses evolve, and why labels shouldn’t define a child
• Why comprehensive evaluations lead to better educational support
• The importance of clear communication between families and schools

One of the most important takeaways: evaluations shouldn’t just identify challenges, they should help uncover how a child learns best and what support will help them thrive.

If you work with students or support families navigating learning differences, this conversation offers valuable perspective.

🌟Win of the Week 🌟

We love hearing from our families! A huge thank you to this wonderful family for their kind words:

"Thank you for making this process so smooth for E and us. We are very happy with your team."

Context: E has spent the first half of his second semester with us, and we’re thrilled to help him transition seamlessly into his new boarding school. By working with the identified school’s curriculum, we’ve ensured he’s incredibly prepared for the next chapter in his educational journey.

Not All Classrooms Have Four Walls — Pacific Preparatory School 03/03/2026

💡 Not all classrooms have four walls, and they shouldn’t.

Education doesn’t have to be confined to a single building, a fixed schedule, or a traditional model. Learning can and should adapt to students’ lives, not the other way around.

At Pacific Preparatory, we embrace a flexible, student-centered approach that allows academics to travel with the learner. Whether students are pursuing athletics, creative passions, travel opportunities, or unique family schedules, they receive rigorous, personalized instruction designed to meet them where they are.

Imagine attending class from different parts of the world. Completing meaningful, independent projects tied to real-world experiences. Structuring learning around peak performance times instead of rigid bells. That’s what happens when education prioritizes adaptability without compromising quality.

The future of education isn’t about four walls, it’s about expanding them.

🎙️ Revisiting a Powerful Podcast Conversation on Kids & Motivation

We’re bringing back one of our most impactful episodes of Forget What You Learned, a conversation with Dr. Ellen Braaten on what “demotivated” kids are actually trying to tell us.

This episode continues to resonate with parents and educators who are asking:
👉 Why does my child seem capable but disengaged?
👉 Is it laziness, or something deeper?
👉 How can we support motivation without adding more pressure?

In this thoughtful discussion, Dr. Braaten explores:
- The difference between ability and genuine engagement
- How pressure and expectations can backfire
- Why pleasure and challenge must coexist in learning
- Practical ways adults can respond with insight instead of frustration

The themes feel just as relevant today as when we first recorded it.

Podcast Rewind: Who Truly Benefits from Boarding School?

If you missed it the first time around, our Season 3, Episode 2 of Forget What You Learned dives deep into a topic that often gets simplified but rarely unpacked: boarding school.

In this episode, our podcast host, Cory sits down with seasoned educational consultant Krissy Naspo to challenge assumptions and explore the real purpose of boarding schools in today’s educational landscape.

Here’s what we unpacked:
- Dispelling Myths: Boarding school isn’t just for the “elite.” Krissy brings clarity to who actually benefits, from diverse learners to students in need of structure, support, or a community that fits them.

- Student-Centered Fit: We dig into why the right fit matters more than prestige. It’s less about brand and more about where a student can grow intellectually, socially, and emotionally.

- Family & Educator Partnership: The role of thoughtful guidance, whether from families, consultants, or schools is key to helping students thrive in and beyond their boarding experience.

- Whether you’re a parent navigating school choices, an educator considering next-step options for students, or simply curious how boarding schools are evolving, this episode offers nuanced, practical insight into one of education’s most talked-about pathways.

What’s one assumption you’ve heard about boarding schools that deserves rethinking? Share your thoughts below!

We’ve launched a new Substack: When School Stops Working

This is a space for families who are quietly questioning whether school is still aligning... whether by choice or necessity.

The essays focus on school fit, structure, and the assumptions about success that often go unexamined until something feels off.

Our goal isn’t to persuade families away from traditional paths. It’s to help them think clearly before making high‑stakes decisions.

If this is a conversation you’re already having with families, or in your own home, you’re welcome to follow along here:

We hope it’s also a useful resource for clinicians, ed consultants, and educators supporting families in moments of misalignment.

Teachers Who Love Teaching, Teach Children to Love Learning — Pacific Preparatory School 02/12/2026

Teachers Who Love Teaching, Teach Children to Love Learning

While 1 in 4 teachers nationally considered leaving the profession in 2021, Pacific Preparatory saw something remarkable: 95% of our teachers chose to return.

What's making the difference? Our teachers tell us it's:

- The 1:1 setting that allows deep, meaningful student connections
- Continuity across years and watching students grow without starting from scratch each fall
- Being treated as autonomous professionals with creative freedom, paid prep time and unlimited access to materials

As one teacher shared: "After 17 years in a traditional classroom, the 1-1 teaching is simply amazing. I get to really know my students at a deeper level and plan teaching that meets their needs and interests."

Perhaps most telling was a graduating senior's reflection: "I think I had a lifelong grudge against teachers. But this past year, I started letting my teachers in, and I let them help me."

When we support teachers, they can fully support students. When teachers love teaching, students love learning!

🎧 A conversation worth circling back to:

Last October, educator and author Carl Ho**er joined our podcast to tackle the question on every educator's mind: How do we embrace AI without losing the humanity of teaching?

This wasn't a conversation about resistance or replacement, it was about reimagining what education can be when we thoughtfully integrate AI tools while keeping human connection at the center.

Key takeaways from our conversation:
- AI as a creativity amplifier, not a shortcut
- Why we need to rethink traditional assessments in an AI world
- How to scaffold AI use so students develop critical thinking skills
- The importance of failure as part of the learning process
- Practical ways teachers can bring AI into classrooms equitably

Carl's perspective is grounded in 25+ years as both a teacher and administrator. He's authored 8 books including "Learning Evolution," which explores the changes education needs to survive and thrive in an AI-enhanced world.

If you're an educator, parent, or anyone interested in the future of learning, this episode offers practical wisdom without the hype or fear-mongering.
