During March 8–July 15, 2020, 818 counties representing 80% of the U.S. population were identified as COVID-19 hotspots. This new report found that virus spread in communities increased during June and July even though outbreaks in high-risk congregate settings were decreasing. Identifying hotspot counties and understanding how they change over time can help prioritize and target implementation of U.S. public health response activities. As of August 11, the total number of COVID-19 cases reported in the United States surpassed 5 million. Although the number of new cases in most states has declined over the last 7 days, COVID-19 continues to be widespread in several US areas, particularly in the South, West, and parts of the Midwest. Steps like wearing a mask correctly in public can help slow the spread of COVID-19. Make sure your mask covers your nose and mouth to help protect others.
