Ultimately, the Powers of Conscious Discipline help us shift from β€œDo as I say, not as I do,” to β€œBe the change you want to see in the world” by doing our own internal work first. The goal is to increase our resiliency, examine our barriers to equity, and begin to see and do things differently, creating positive change for ourselves, our children, our communities and our world.ο»Ώο»Ώ

Wow! That is really powerful! Our children are ALWAYS watching! If we react to our children in an unhealthy way (yelling, screaming, belittling) then how can we expect them to react to us any differently? If we want children to learn a new skill, we must teach it!

Such a powerful shift in mindset! πŸ’™

If traffic makes you angry, then traffic is in charge of you. If children make you frustrated, then you have placed the children in charge. If your significant other makes you happy, then you have placed them in charge.

When you make traffic and children responsible for your internal feeling states, they have the power and the responsibility to make things better or worse for you. You are powerless to change and dependent on others for happiness and peace of mind. You are a victim to life.

Instead, we can choose to use self-regulation to be in charge of our feelings, reclaim our personal power and be responsible for ourselves.

Happy New Year! Just a little food for thought as we are beginning our parenting journeys for the year!

The beginning of the year is a wonderful time to reflect upon our journey up to this point and begin thinking about how we can improve our journey for the upcoming year! Believe it or not, your journey does not begin with reflecting on your child's behavior, it begins by reflecting on your behavior as a parent.

Here are thoughts to ponder as you begin your journey:

1. Am I only focused on my child's negative behavior? How might the result be different if I focused on the behavior I want to see?

2. How does my own child rearing impact how I am raising my own child(ren)? Do I see mistakes as opportunities to teach a new skill rather than my child(ren) purposefully trying to get under my skin?

3. Am I focused making my child(ren) to behave? What if I focused on changing the only person who can change, which is myself? Afterall, I cannot help my child if I am not regulated myself.

I do not ask these questions to create guilt or anxiety about your parenting. I ask these questions to help you reflect on how you may be able to build better connections with your child(ren) and to realize that when we know better, we can do better (Maya Angelou).

What are you committed to changing as we journey through 2023? I'll begin. I am committed to accepting each moment as it is and to remember that no one can make me angry without my permission!

Please share your commitments below! I would love to help you on your journey!
