There is no nationally recognized license or standardized credential for โherbalist,โ โclinical herbalist,โ or โMaster Herbalist.โ
And that matters.
Because these titles carry weight when people see them.
They can make us assume a certain level of education, expertise, or oversight that may not actually exist.
๐๐จ ๐ฐ๐ก๐๐ญ ๐๐จ ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ฌ๐ ๐ญ๐ข๐ญ๐ฅ๐๐ฌ ๐ฆ๐๐๐ง?
Wellโฆ it depends.
They may mean someone has spent years (or decades) studying and practicing herbalism.
They may mean someone earned a certificate from a 25 hour online class โฆ or they completed a rigorous educational program.
Or they may simply mean someone chose that title for themselves.
There is no national governing body that says:

That doesn't mean there aren't excellent schools, mentors, organizations, or professional standards within the herbal community.
There absolutely are.
For example, the American Herbalists Guild has a voluntary, peer-reviewed Registered Herbalist credential with educational and clinical experience requirements.
But even credentials like this are not government licenses.
And titles such as โCertified Herbalistโ or โMaster Herbalistโ awarded by individual programs are not nationally standardized credentials.
๐๐จโฆ ๐ก๐จ๐ฐ ๐๐จ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ ๐ค๐ง๐จ๐ฐ ๐ฐ๐ก๐๐ง ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ'๐ฏ๐ ๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐ ๐ ๐ ๐จ๐จ๐ ๐ก๐๐ซ๐๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ?
I'd askโฆ How do you know when you've found a good teacher?
Or a good doctor?
You listen to them.
You talk to them.
You get to know them.
Do they know their limitations?
Do they admit the boundaries of their knowledge?
Are they transparent about their education and experience?
Do they tell you when something falls outside their scope?
Where are their areas of passion and deeper study?
Are they continuing their education?
Do they communicate with peers and professionals?
๐๐๐ซ๐๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ฌ๐ฆ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ฏ๐๐ฌ๐ญ.
There are more traditions, more plants, more bodies of knowledge, and more research than any one person could possibly master in a lifetime.
There will always be areas of strength and areas where we still have more to learn.
And honestly?
I think that's part of what makes a good herbalist.
To be an herbalist is to be on a path of constant learning, connecting, questioning, and growing.
There's no room for stagnation.

In a world full of Google and AI, it is more important than ever to look for professionalism.
To hold high standards.
To ask questions.
And to make sure we're vetting ๐๐ง๐ฒ information (herbal or otherwise) in which we're consuming.
A title can tell you what someone calls themselves.
