The mission of the Garvey Tubman Cultural Arts and Research Center (GTCARC) is to provide services of interest in the Africa

n American community sharing a viable support system that speaks to the community’s educational, emotional and cultural needs by providing high quality, child friendly, and relevant subject matter. We provide facilitated instructions with professional artists supporting emerging artistic minds. GTCARC empowers through creativity, showcasing, marketing, sales, self-promotion and through a mix of artistic learning that will foster lifelong connections and friendships. This authentic program is the only of its kind in the Springfield city limits or surrounding areas.

On March 2, 1955, fifteen-year-old Claudette Colvin was riding home on a city bus after a long day at school. A white passenger boarded, and the bus driver ordered Claudette to give up her seat. Claudette refused. As she later told Newsweek "I felt like Sojourner Truth was pushing down on one shoulder and Harriet Tubman was pushing down on the other. I was glued to my seat." Colvin was arrested for her civil disobedience and briefly put in jail. Roughly 9 months later and inspired Rosa Parks was arrested for the same refusal, launching the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The boycott lasted 13 months and led to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that segregation on public buses is unconstitutional.
