🦞Crayfish on the loose! 🦞

What happens when first-grade classroom pet, Larry, makes a daring escape? You’ll have to watch to find out.

(This adventurous crayfish is part of a first-grade science unit exploring plant and animal survival—but last week, Larry gave students and staff an unexpected real-life lesson in our core values--self-determination & teamwork!)

Thankfully, this little explorer was safely recovered (from a surprising location).

Last week, our Multilingual Learners in Grades K–2 proudly presented portfolios of their hard work to families, teachers, and staff.

At Springfield Prep, we believe students should have opportunities to celebrate their academic progress and talk proudly about their learning, and we love bringing families into the conversation! Thanks to all of the parents who joined us to recognize their child's work and to cheer on their classmates, and to Ms. Hall and Ms. Collins for making the event such a joyful celebration of learning!

Our students in Grades 3–5 had an inspiring Career Day on Friday!

Thanks to an incredible group of parent volunteers—including parents of students and even a parent of one of our teachers—students explored a wide range of career fields, from veterinary medicine, physician assistant work, dental hygiene, military service, social work and human services, law, accounting, banking, and culinary arts.

Students rotated through stations, asked thoughtful questions, took notes, and eagerly shared their own ambitions for the future. We’re so grateful to the volunteers and 3-5 teachers who made this special experience possible!

This week, our 5th graders spent the day exploring the beautiful campus of — with memorable visits to the and .

Students engaged thoughtfully with the artwork, asked insightful questions, and took in the beauty of the gardens and greenhouse. In response to the Don't Mind if I Do exhibit, one budding 5th-grade art appreciator shared, “I don’t know what some of it is, but I know it makes me feel something.”

We’re so grateful to partners like Smith College for hosting such rich learning experiences for our students!

Proud of our team for presenting at the Next Chapter Literacy Conference here in Springfield on Friday!

Elementary Principal Shawna Mitchell, 1st-grade teacher Rahael George, and 6th-Grade Science Teacher, Juan Yuen led a session on “Whole School Reading Routines That Stick,” sharing simple, research-based routines that build students’ reading skills across grades and content areas.

Report Card Conferences + Book Fair = a big day for our school community!

We successfully held 92% of our family conferences in a single day — a big lift and team effort. This reflects the hard work and coordination of our teachers, school leaders, and operations team, along with the deep commitment of our families to partner in their child’s learning.

We love turning this day into a full community experience. Families browsed our Scholastic Book Fair, connected with teachers, and supported our Middle School's Student Government reps, who led a busy bake sale to fundraise for upcoming events and activities. An afternoon and evening full of connection, partnership, and pride in our students. What a night 💙📚

Our Black History Month Celebration was everything we hoped it would be - families, students, staff, and community members filled the gym to connect, celebrate, and honor Black history together.

The afternoon was filled with student voice and creativity - uplifting musical performances from our elementary students and a powerful show from our dance team that prompted moments of joy and reflection. And the Fashion Show? Absolutely incredible. Our scholars modeled clothes they designed and sewed from upcycled fabrics inspired by African roots, historical eras, and HBCU homecoming styles!

The food was delicious, the energy was unmatched, and the pride in the room was palpable.

Thank you to our staff, students, families, and community vendors who make this event so special!

Back-to-back CHAMPIONS. 🏀🔥

For the second year in a row, our Girls Basketball Team brought home the title, winning the championship game this Saturday!

Coach Dionna Boyd reflected, “This was about more than basketball. We never gave up on each other — and that’s why we’re champions.”

And from 7th grader Serenity Plummer:
“It took a lot of trust and teamwork and everybody putting in their part.”

Go Hawks!

Every year, our 4th graders read — and fall in love with — the novel, "Where the Mountain Meets the Moon". This year, they had the opportunity to meet its author, Grace Lin (), over Zoom — and it was pure reading magic.

Students asked Grace thoughtful questions about their favorite characters, the novel’s themes, and what inspires her writing. Grace shared her journey as an author, her childhood experiences navigating identity, her commitment to representing Asian characters in literature, and the hard work and collaboration it takes to bring a book into the world.

And as if that wasn’t enough… she taught our scholars how to draw dragons 🐉✨

So much gratitude for the author, Grace Lin!
