I'm wondering today what others remember hearing about what had happened in NYC, PA and the Pentagon September11, 2001. Staff, parents and students and other former ECC folks are invited to post and share here.
I was in the classroom and a therapist mentioned that it was horrible what was happening. I went to the doorway with her and the hallway was buzzing. I think that it was just as the towers were falling, which I watched a few minutes later when I logged onto the computer that I had in the classroom. I kept going back and forth between CNN and NBC to try to get better updates.. I put wired earphones on the speakers so that I was the only one that could hear, and turned the screen so the kids couldn't see.. I had to figure out what to say and what not to say to my class... In the days that followed we (staff) were trying to be careful and comforting with the children, saying enough - but not too much.

Safiatu Kingsan Bah Hi Ms. Gini, you know I have 2 handsome young black men in their 20s. The older one was in the habit of driving with his hoodie on. Every time I saw him do that I could not help but say something to him, talk some street smart into him, let him know that as a black man I’m America, you are always a target and seen as a perceived threat and wearing a hoodie while driving is definitely inviting unwanted attention from the police. THEY WILL FIND A REASON TO STOP YOU! Thank God he grew out of that behavior. As a black women, every time I see cops around, I become more alert and more attentive and more aware of my surrounding. I’ve been pulled over by a cop who was driving the opposite way in a suburb. As soon as we crossed path, I saw him looking at me and I know he was going to turn around and stop me and I was right. According to him, I was driving at 40 miles in a 45 mile an hr zone and asked if I lived in the neighborhood. I told him no and that I was visiting, he proceeded to ask for my license which I gave him. I was alone with him in that area. I had all these thoughts going through my head because no telling what could have happened. He gave me back my license and said “have a safe drive home”. I looked him in the eye and said “thank you” and shook my head and I knew that he knew exactly what I was thinking without opening my mouth. It’s a sad but the struggle is real my people when you are black in this wonderful USA. There are good cops out there but a few bad apples spoils the rest. Stay safe everyone.
**Thank you for allowing me to share here Safi. I for you to have left your original country and have to deal with this garbage, I'm really proud to say that I know you and your older children, and I hope that your entire family stays safe and well.
