We got another guide for 3-5th grades Hi there! My name is Heather Dalke I will be teaching a 3rd-5th grade class of 9 students and I wanted to share a little info for you to get to know me a little better. I moved to Spokane a little less than a year ago to be closer to family and it's been wonderful. My undergraduate degree is in Environmental Education from Western Washington University. I worked in the marine biology field teaching students and the community about our research. This included going into students classrooms and doing hands-on lessons with them, taking them out in nature and teaching them through experiential learning, and even going on overnight trips with them. After a handful of years on this path I took a new direction working more professionally with students and different challenges they may face.
I worked at a college advising students through their academic achievements. From there, I began my graduate degree in School Counseling and completed this degree in December 2019. I am excited to now be a licensed School Counselor. I know many students and families are experiencing many different circumstances at this time. These are different times and I'm excited for the opportunity to guide students this year through the Prenda Program. I'll also be offering some group counseling opportunities after several of the school days. I'm thrilled by this opportunity to assist students and families during this time and excited for the small and hands-on learning environment this program offers.

I grew up on the South Hill of Spokane, and after getting a Bachelor's in English and a Master's in Teaching at Whitworth, I moved to Boulder, Colorado with my husband, Shane. I began my career as an English teacher, teaching high school for six years and middle school for another six years. Throughout this time, I also took on a more administrative role coordinating the schools' International Baccalaureate (IB) programs. This is how I came to understand the power of student-centered learning! I continue to conduct evaluation visits and facilitate workshops for schools throughout the country that offer IB programs.
We were thrilled when Shane was offered a teaching position at Gonzaga in the spring of 2018. We moved home with our son Max, who was six at the time, and settled into the Cannon Hill neighborhood. Max thrived at Wilson, and I worked part-time at a home partnership school in Central Valley. Last year, I worked as a full-time IB coordinator at Pride Prep, a public charter school located downtown.
When I learned about Prenda's model, I thought, "This is what good public schools have been trying to do, but their size keeps getting in the way!" From my perspective as an educator and a parent, I think microschools provide a solution that is both personalized and collaborative, in a setting where students can explore freely within safe boundaries. With Covid-19 shaking up the status quo, I'm excited to be part of the Prenda movement. The stability of meeting regularly in a home -- combined with a model that is designed to actually empower students -- is exactly what my family needs right now. I hope you can join us!
Please feel free to give me a call/text at 720-254-5023, or email me at [email protected]. I would love to talk more with you.
So excited to announce we have 2-4 grades available now with an amazing guide Stephanie! We will provide photo and bio in a few days. If you are interested in 2-4 please DM us!

Here is the 20/21 calendar, If District 81 changes their calendar prior to school start then I may change the calendar as well.
Empowering learners means that we avoid doing things like...
Assigning homework
Assigning classwork
Making goals for your students
Giving lectures
Giving answers
Shaming students when they struggle

Watching someone discover something for themselves is amazing!
The first thing to do when a student asks for help or is starting to shut down is to ask them the question "What have you already tried?"
This does a few things for the student's frame of mind:
It reminds them that they are the owner of their learning. No one can pour the knowledge into their brain.
It helps them reflect on their process. We have seen many children find the solution while explaining their past failed attempts.
It encourages them to use all their resources. In many of our online learning tools, there are built-in "hints" or lessons that can give the student a greater understanding of the concept. Sometimes students try once, get a wrong answer and start to quit. Instead of rescuing them here, encourage them to use all their available resources (hints, lessons, a google search, etc). Often simply reminding them that there are other supports they could access before asking for help can do the trick.
It re-engages them in the learning process. Helping a student stay focused when they want to walk away builds grit and perseverance.
Bonus tip: if a student is wavering in commitment or enthusiasm, you can ask, "Do you want to learn this?"
