Check out this OpEd by our director Dr. Henning and Council Member Paul Dillion! It highlights why establishing a “right to cooling” for renters is a critical issue, especially as extreme heat becomes more common and dangerous. Infants and children, pregnant people, adults 65 and older, and people with heart and lung disease may experience severe acute and chronic symptoms from smoke exposure. It’s important to discuss a plan with your healthcare provider before the smoke arrives. More wildfire smoke information can be found at SmokeReadySpokane.org.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) is a color-coded tool used to report hourly air quality. Checking the AQI can help you make the best decisions for your health and that of your family. Since air quality can change quickly during wildfire smoke events, check the AQI often at SpokaneCleanAir.org.

Exposure to wildfire smoke can cause or worsen several health problems, ranging from minor to severe. When smoke is present, the worst symptoms more often occur in people with pre-existing health conditions, though anyone can have symptoms or health problems. Some symptoms are burning eyes, a runny nose, coughing, fatigue, headache, wheezing, and shortness of breath. More wildfire smoke information can be found at SmokeReadySpokane.org.
