There’s nothing like a Friday at Drive 509. Great people, big personalities, and plenty of laughs. We might be a little biased, but we think we’re pretty cool. 😎

Watch as one our instructors perfoms an offset!

Offset backing becomes much easier when you stop treating it like one big maneuver and start breaking it into controlled stages.

First, make sure your setup is consistent. Then create a small, controlled angle and use the cones, barrels, and your mirrors as reference points. Once the tractor and trailer reach the angle you need, begin straightening the truck so the trailer can track toward the center of the space. As the trailer enters the lane, keep watching both sides, make small corrections, and bring the tractor back underneath the trailer to finish straight.

The goal is not to memorize a bunch of aggressive steering movements. It is to understand what the tractor and trailer are doing at each stage. Every correction affects the trailer, so stay slow, use your mirrors, and give yourself time to react.

Do not rush to complete the entire maneuver perfectly on your first attempt. Practice the setup, pull forward, reset, and repeat it until each stage feels familiar. Consistent repetition is what turns offset backing from a confusing maneuver into a repeatable process.

Save this video for your next range session and send it to someone working on their CDL skills!
