Pope Francis declares Ash Wednesday a day of fasting and prayer for peace in Ukraine 02/26/2022

Lent begins next week. It will probably have more meaning for many of us this year.

In 1988, while backpacking around the world the summer after graduation and before I entered novitiate, I connected with a group of North American Redemptorists in Rome for the 1,000 anniversary of Christianity's acceptance in Ukraine. They invited me to join them as they visited the Redemptorist houses around Naples that were part of our Congregation's early history.

During the trip, I remember having lunch at rustic eateries in the Naples countryside. And they always started and finished with a sung prayer for the restaurant owner & staff.

A few years later, while studying at Catholic Theological Union (Chicago), I was able to spend part of my summer learning about Eastern Orthodox Christianity, monasticism and iconography at a beautiful Ukrainian monastery, located halfway up a mountain in northern California.

These fond memories is part of why I stand with and pray for Ukraine today. But they're not the only reason.

Over the past decade, we have seen a backlash to the success of democracy with the rise of authoritarians (and wannabes) threatening democracy throughout the world. Here in the U.S., we have seen nativist and partisan resentments, fueled by social media algorithms and Russian disinformation, tear families apart.

While we can all agree on supporting Ukraine in a range of ways, I sense that Pope Francis' call for fasting and prayer goes beyond the invasion of Ukraine -- but to the underlying distrust, divisiveness & indignation that fueled this invasion but also the tears in our families and communities.

Pope Francis declares Ash Wednesday a day of fasting and prayer for peace in Ukraine “Jesus taught us that the diabolical senselessness of violence is answered with God's weapons, with prayer and fasting,” the pope said as the situation continued to deteriorate between Russia and Ukraine.

Remember visits to the Blessed Sacrament? Maybe St. Alphonsus' wisdom can guide us if we aren't able to get to church.
