The Sankofa - A Transformational Experience

Personal growth and professional development through coaching and facilitated discussion groups. Sankofa speaks to reflection. It speaks to reclamation.

We must know where we have been to understand where we are and appreciate where we are going. Sankofa is a Ghanaian word or concept that means “to go back and get it.” Symbolized by a bird holding an egg (the future) in its mouth, while looking back at where it has been, Sankofa teaches us to reach back and gather the best of what our past has to offer, so that we can purposefully move forward. It’s the dawn of a new day. The beginning of a new year. An opportunity to appreciate the lessons of yesteryear as enlightened experiences designed to propel us into a most certain future.

Those lessons are meaningless if we do nothing with them.

God willing, we have roughly 525,600 minutes to draw on what we have learned and do something extraordinary in the coming year. Let’s not waste them. Leave anything that does not serve you in 2021. There are hills to climb, mountains to conquer, journeys to plan, businesses to build, ministries to birth, and lives to impact. I look forward to celebrating who we will become in 2022. Happy New Year!

What happened last night, last week, last month, and last year are now not too distant memories of the good, the bad, the wins and the lessons learned.

There were appreciated experiences that tested our mettle in unbelievable ways.

There were unexpected losses that more times than not did not afford us the opportunity to bid farewell or to properly grieve.

There were seemingly impossible “pull the covers over our head and stay in the bed moments” that convinced us with absolute certainty that things would never be the same again.

They won’t.

But that was yesterday.

Today is a brand new day that brings a brand new perspective. With it comes a new opportunity to experience. A new challenge to endure. A new idea to birth. A new season to weather. A new obstacle to overcome. A new chapter to write. So grab a pen and turn the page because the gift of a new reality begins.....today.

A new month brings new beginnings, new possibilities, and new opportunities. As they say “the best is yet to come.” Believe it.

Your happiness is not predicated on a mandate to please others. Your transformation (physical, mental, or spiritual) does not necessitate conformity. This is your life, to do with as you like, how you like, unapologetically. No explanation is required. Just. Do. You. “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.”

Acknowledging what has been said is not the same as accepting was has been said or a validation of truth. It is respect. It says “While I may not agree with you, I hear and understand what you are saying.” Just for today, respect that there are different views of the world. “It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.”

Spring is the season of rebirth, rejuvenation, renewal, resurrection and regrowth. That which has laid dormant, getting much needed rest and nutrients from the earth, is ready to burst through the soil and bless us in so many ways. That period of dormancy can be days, weeks, or months however the end result is the same with proper care - a magnificent creation to gaze upon or to graze upon.

Our thoughts and ideas work very much in the same way. They lay dormant until we are ready to bring them to fruition. If we do nothing with them, we get nothing in return. However, if we take action and nurture them, we will be rewarded for the days to come. What is laying in wait in you today? Are you ready to bring it to the light of day? If not now, when? “Whatever a man sows this he will also reap,“ Galatians 6:7. Today I commit to planting seeds.
