Tomorrow, the 7th Mimosa Hills Junior Invitational tees off at one of North Carolina’s most historic golf courses. ⛳️

Designed by legendary Scottish architect Donald Ross in 1929, Mimosa Hills Golf Club in Morganton, N.C., sits against the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Ross used the natural terrain to create a classic, walkable routing featuring many of his trademarks: inviting approaches, strategic bunkering and greens where missing in the wrong spot can quickly turn costly. The course underwent a major restoration in 2002-03 with an emphasis on preserving Ross’ original design.

Since the Mimosa Hills Junior Invitational began in 2020, its champions have included some of the Carolinas’ top junior golfers:

The champions have been crowned at the 21st Carolinas Mixed Team Championship!

Carter Boulia and Megan Morris finished at -11 to win the Championship Division by one stroke.

David League and Pam Prescott posted -7 to claim the Senior Division by eight strokes, while Charlie and Niza Hall finished at -2 to win the Super Senior Division by three strokes.

Morgan and Karen Anderson prevailed in a one-hole playoff to win the Tournament Division at +12.

Congratulations to all of our champions, and thank you to everyone who competed this weekend! A special thank you to Oak Point Golf Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort for hosting a great championship!

Garrett Gillespie is the 2026 South Carolina Amateur Match Play Champion!

Gillespie played States Ford in the championship match and won 1 up on the 18th hole. Ford is the only player to have taken Gillespie to all 18 holes throughout his seven rounds of matchplay this week. Congrats Garrett, and a big thank you to the staff and membership of DeBordieu Club for helping make this year‘s event such a success!

Thirty-seven years ago, a Carolinian made history at Merion. 🏆

In 1989, Chris Patton of Fountain Inn, S.C., arrived at Merion Golf Club as a 21-year-old rising senior at Clemson and left as the U.S. Amateur champion.

Patton’s path to the national stage started here in the Carolinas. He finished runner-up at the 1985 South Carolina Junior Boys’ Championship and earned stroke-play medalist honors at the 1987 South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship.

Two years later at Merion, Patton advanced through stroke play and won six matches, including a comeback victory in the semifinals, before defeating Danny Green, 3 and 1, in the 36-hole championship match.

The victory earned Patton invitations to the first three majors of 1990. He went on to make the cut and earn low-amateur honors at the Masters.

Now, 37 years later, the U.S. Amateur is back at Merion.
