There's a word for the feeling you get when you look around your home of 30 years and don't know where to start.
It's not weakness. It's being human.
For many older adults, downsizing isn't just about moving. It's about letting go of a lifetime of memories, routines, and possessions.
Here are the 3 feelings our seminar attendees describe most:
๐ Overwhelmed โ "I don't even know where to begin."
๐ Emotional โ "Every item seems to hold a memory."
๐ Guilty โ "I feel bad getting rid of things my family gave me."
The good news? These feelings are completely normalโand you don't have to navigate them alone.
When you understand what you're feeling, you can begin moving forward with confidence.

Downsizing is rarely a solo decision.
Sometimes it starts with a conversation โ and sometimes that's the hardest part.
Where are you right now?
A) We've talked about it openly
B) I've been thinking about it but haven't said anything yet
C) My family brought it up โ I'm not sure how I feel
D) Haven't gotten there yet
No right answer. Every stage is valid. ๐

What a wonderful morning at Legacy Learning Series!
We were thrilled to welcome such a great turnout for our seminar, The Truth About Staying in Your Home. Many older adults want to remain in the homes they love, but understanding the resources available can make all the difference in doing so safely and successfully.
Our attendees heard from three outstanding experts who shared valuable information about the different types of in-home support available:
๐ก Medical Home Care โ Skilled nursing and healthcare services provided in the home.
๐ค Non-Medical Home Care โ Assistance with daily activities such as meal preparation, housekeeping, transportation, and companionship.
โค๏ธ Individual Care Providers โ Independent caregivers who can provide personalized support tailored to an individual's unique needs.
The discussion was informative, engaging, and empoweringโgiving attendees practical knowledge to help them plan ahead and make informed decisions about their future.
A sincere thank you to our three wonderful speakers for sharing your expertise and to everyone who attended and participated in the conversation.
At Legacy Learning Series, our mission is simple: Educate. Guide. Empower.
We look forward to seeing you at our next seminar!

Spending time outdoors is one of the best parts of spring and summer โ enjoying the sunshine, gardening, relaxing on the patio, or simply taking in the fresh air can do wonders for both physical and mental well-being. ๐ทโ๏ธ
But for many older adults, maintaining outdoor spaces can become increasingly demanding over time. Tasks like mowing the lawn, pulling weeds, trimming bushes, cleaning gutters, or keeping up with seasonal yard work may start to feel more exhausting than enjoyable.
Thatโs often when people begin to rethink what they truly want from their home and lifestyle. For some, that means simplifying landscaping. For others, it means exploring lower-maintenance living options like a smaller home, condo, or 55+ community where exterior maintenance is handled for them.
The goal isnโt to give up enjoying the outdoors โ itโs to spend more time enjoying it and less time maintaining it. Imagine having the freedom to enjoy your morning coffee on the patio, take walks, travel more often, or spend time with family without constantly worrying about home upkeep.
Your home should support the lifestyle you want in this season of life โ not create more stress or physical strain.
Whatโs your favorite way to enjoy the outdoors this time of year? ๐ผ๐ก

Many people think about staying in their home in terms of where they live.
What people often discover is that the bigger conversation is about how they live.
Questions often emerge around safety, mobility, daily routines, caregiving support, and how changing needs affect independence.
The next conversation in the Legacy Learning Series will focus on understanding these realities.

For many people, staying at home represents comfort, independence, and familiarity.
But questions often emerge as circumstances change. What kinds of support are realistically available at home? How do caregiving needs evolve over time? When do families begin considering additional help?
What people often discover is that remaining at home successfully often depends on understanding the different types of support that may become necessary along the way.
As part of the next Legacy Learning Series conversation, weโre grateful to welcome a panel of professionals who work closely with these realities every day:
โข Marie Ambrosino from CenterWell Home Health
โข Brenda MacDonald from KindHeart Helpers of Maine
โข Kathy Damon from Home Instead
Together, they will help explore what in-home support can look like, common misunderstandings about aging in place, and what families should consider as needs evolve over time.

Staying at home is often described as a goal.
But questions many families wrestle with include what it actually takes to make that goal sustainable.
How does support change over time? What modifications become important? How do people evaluate whether a home continues meeting their needs?
What people often discover is that preparation creates options.
The next conversation in the Legacy Learning Series will focus on understanding these realities.

One of the biggest challenges when downsizing is holding onto items โjust in case.โ
Just in case I need it.
Just in case someone wants it.
Just in case I regret letting it go.
While those thoughts are completely normal, they can make it harder to move forward. A helpful mindset shift is asking:
โข Have I used this in the past year?
โข Do I realistically see myself using it again?
โข Would someone else benefit from this now?
Letting go doesnโt erase memories โ it simply creates space for your next chapter. And often, people find that they donโt miss the items nearly as much as they expected.
Progress, not perfection, is the goal.
