The Lincoln Institute of Land Policy will be hosting an event on Community Land Trusts in Rio De Janeiro this Thursday in Cambridge. If you're in Boston, the event is free and will be well worth going to.
The Potential of Community Land Trusts in Rio's Favelas Rio de Janeiro is home to some 1000 favela communities, the vast majority situated on public lands. Urban resilience is core to I2UD's work. In our latest blog post, we discuss the history of resilience, the growth of resilience in international development, and our past research applying resilience frameworks to specific cities. We specifically highlight a 2014 project in Cartagena, Colombia and Condega, Nicaragua, which considers resilience in the context of different types of urban areas. Resilience-based thinking continues to frame the research we do today.

10 years ago, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency sponsored I2UD's study on Migration, Remittances and Housing which focuses on Senegal, Kenya, and South Africa. As hundreds of thousands of people are currently being displaced around the world it is important to recognize the economic and social impacts created both in the new countries of residence, but also in their countries of origin. The push and pull of populations is constantly occurring and it is important to understand the links which are created between the two countries through migrant populations.

Dr. Mona Serageldin will be in Iraq in the upcoming weeks furthering the collaborative project between I2UD and the United Nations Development Programme - UNDP. Meetings with local government officials, Ministry staff members and UNDP staff are essential to creating synergistic solutions and development plans within the varying regions of Iraq. Strategies must be tailored to specific contexts. For instance, the marshes of southern Iraq require specific attention to ecological sustainability as well as water conservation and distribution tools to protect local residents and wildlife.
The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa has released their Economic Report on Africa 2017 - Urbanization and Industrialization for Africa's Transformation. Africa is urbanizing at faster rates than almost anywhere on the planet making discussions on economic growth, equitable development and sustainable urbanization patterns extremely important and applicable. The movement of populations towards urban centers is being widely accepted as an unstoppable trend which has shifted the discussion of development towards increasing the capacity of cities to absorb the influx of populations. We must keep in mind the spatial implications of future economic development policies which are born out of and will exist in an African context.
