Your child needs algebra. So why is their tutor working on DOTS? 👀
It sounds backwards.
If your child is struggling with equations, fractions, multiplication, or other grade-level math, it makes perfect sense to wonder why a tutor would spend time on something that looks elementary.
But sometimes the problem did not begin with the math they're struggling with today.
One foundational skill I assess is subitizing, the ability to recognize small quantities without counting every item one by one.
That matters because higher-level math quietly assumes students can already recognize quantities, see groups, understand part-whole relationships, and flexibly connect numbers.
When those foundations are fragile, students can memorize increasingly complicated procedures while still doing an enormous amount of mental work underneath them.
Eventually, the cracks show.
I wrote this article because I wanted parents to understand why specialized math intervention sometimes looks very different from ordinary tutoring, especially for students with dyscalculia, ADHD, or persistent math difficulties.
And because I refuse to throw around research claims just because they sound impressive, I also dig into what the evidence does and does not tell us about subitizing, multiplication, algebra, working memory, confidence, CRA instruction, and long-term math development.
