Your child needs algebra. So why is their tutor working on DOTS? 👀

It sounds backwards.

If your child is struggling with equations, fractions, multiplication, or other grade-level math, it makes perfect sense to wonder why a tutor would spend time on something that looks elementary.

But sometimes the problem did not begin with the math they're struggling with today.

One foundational skill I assess is subitizing, the ability to recognize small quantities without counting every item one by one.

That matters because higher-level math quietly assumes students can already recognize quantities, see groups, understand part-whole relationships, and flexibly connect numbers.

When those foundations are fragile, students can memorize increasingly complicated procedures while still doing an enormous amount of mental work underneath them.

Eventually, the cracks show.

I wrote this article because I wanted parents to understand why specialized math intervention sometimes looks very different from ordinary tutoring, especially for students with dyscalculia, ADHD, or persistent math difficulties.

And because I refuse to throw around research claims just because they sound impressive, I also dig into what the evidence does and does not tell us about subitizing, multiplication, algebra, working memory, confidence, CRA instruction, and long-term math development.

I see this pattern constantly: bright, capable kids who freeze at math, melt down over worksheets, and lose confidence because traditional tutoring keeps hitting the same wall.

Here's what most parents don't realize: dyscalculic brains don't process math the way flashcards and pencil-and-paper drills assume they do. Visual-sequential practice (the foundation of traditional tutoring) targets a processing pathway that's often the bottleneck for neurodivergent learners. More of the same tool doesn't fix the problem-it compounds the frustration.

I see this pattern constantly: a bright kid grasps a math concept in the moment, then can't access it the next day. Parents tell me, 'But they *know* this.' And they're right-the math ability is there.

The breakdown isn't math. It's the invisible infrastructure underneath.

Three executive function barriers collapse math learning:

1. Organization chaos → Can't find practice sheets. Lost strategies. Materials scattered across three notebooks. Confidence eroding.

Number sense is the invisible foundation-and when it's shaky, math feels impossible, even for bright kids.

I see it all the time: a child who can rattle off counting but genuinely can't tell you if 7 or 5 is bigger. That's not a memory problem or a motivation problem. That's a number sense gap-and it's exactly what I work to rebuild.
