“They KNOW how to do this. So why do they keep getting it wrong?”

If you've ever said that about your child, the problem may not be as simple as needing more math practice.

Math requires students to do much more than understand numbers and procedures. They also have to hold information in mind, organize multiple steps, choose the right strategy, stop themselves from using the wrong one, shift approaches when something isn't working, and notice their own mistakes.

And sometimes, the student knows the math but struggles to manage everything their brain has to do in order to use it.

That distinction matters.

Your child needs algebra. So why is their tutor working on DOTS? 👀

It sounds backwards.

If your child is struggling with equations, fractions, multiplication, or other grade-level math, it makes perfect sense to wonder why a tutor would spend time on something that looks elementary.

But sometimes the problem did not begin with the math they're struggling with today.

One foundational skill I assess is subitizing, the ability to recognize small quantities without counting every item one by one.

That matters because higher-level math quietly assumes students can already recognize quantities, see groups, understand part-whole relationships, and flexibly connect numbers.

When those foundations are fragile, students can memorize increasingly complicated procedures while still doing an enormous amount of mental work underneath them.

Eventually, the cracks show.

I wrote this article because I wanted parents to understand why specialized math intervention sometimes looks very different from ordinary tutoring, especially for students with dyscalculia, ADHD, or persistent math difficulties.

And because I refuse to throw around research claims just because they sound impressive, I also dig into what the evidence does and does not tell us about subitizing, multiplication, algebra, working memory, confidence, CRA instruction, and long-term math development.
