This week at Forest School, the children began their session with a special sensory hunt. They used all their senses to explore the field – listening to the wind in the trees, smelling the flowers, and noticing the different sights and textures around them. 🍃🌼
The children were excited to spot butterflies, which sparked lots of curiosity and led to a lovely discussion as they looked for more and shared what they noticed. 🦋
Of course, they were eager to have their regular visit to the mud kitchen, where the children enjoyed making mud cupcakes and cups of tea for their friends! 🍰☕
It’s been wonderful to see their creativity, curiosity and imagination flourish in the outdoor environment.

After a rather wet morning, the children were thrilled to see a little bit of sunshine for this week's Forest School session. First, they played a fun game where they moved like lots of different animals. They loved fluttering like butterflies 🦋, snapping like crocodiles🐊, jumping like kangaroos 🦘, and scurrying like mice 🐭!

Next, they enjoyed exploring the story of The Very Greedy Bee and learned about pollination and why bees are so important for the environment 🐝 Taking inspiration from the book, the children dipped freshly cut flowers into paint and made beautiful prints on fabric, creating a gorgeous piece of art to be displayed in our outdoor classroom.

To round off the session, the children couldn't resist taking turns to roll down the hill before making their way to the ever-popular mud kitchen, where they had huge amounts of fun exploring the gloriously gloopy mud!

The children were thrilled to be back at Forest School after the half-term break! 🌿

Luckily, the rain held off and we enjoyed a lovely mild afternoon outdoors.

We kicked things off with a fun game of hide and seek, before getting creative by painting pinecones in beautiful colours to brighten up our outdoor classroom. 🎨

To finish, everyone had great fun in the mud kitchen, whipping up some delicious-looking mud cupcakes! 🧁

Recently, the children made their own bread and butter. First, we put some double cream into a clean glass jar. The children took it in turns to shake the jar as hard as they could. As they shook, we listened for the sound inside the jar to change and turn into a sort of ‘sloshing’ sound. This was the sign to open the jar and see what had happened - the shaking had turned the cream into beautiful yellow butter, leaving behind some buttermilk! After rinsing the butter, we chilled it, ready for using later.
To make the bread, the children mixed Greek yoghurt and flour into a dough, and after kneading it, they rolled out the dough to make flatbreads. An adult cooked the breads and once they were cooled, the children were able to tuck in and enjoy their own homemade bread and butter. They all agreed, it was absolutely delicious! 😋

The welcome return of warmer weather means that we can spend lots of time enjoying our outside areas, and this afternoon, we spent time at the very top of the field, revelling in the sunshine. The children used their listening skills to identify the sounds they heard, an important skill in their phonics development and after using all of their senses to explore their surroundings, we took some lovely bark rubbings of the trees. There was lots of super language used in their descriptions of the trees and the bark rubbings were great for practising their motor skills. We worked out that it would take 4 children, holding hands to encircle one of the tree trunks and after naming the parts of a tree, they had fun, trying to balance on the tree roots, great for developing their core strength. Simple, free activities, each bringing its own benefits and skill development. We can’t wait to go out on the field again tomorrow! 😃☀️🌳

The children were so excited for the first Forest School session of the term! We began with a lively game of What’s the Time, Mr Wolf? before heading off for some pond dipping. Using nets, the children loved exploring the school pond and were thrilled to discover water beetles, pond skaters, dragonfly larvae — and most exciting of all, newts! 🐸
We are incredibly lucky to have such wonderful facilities, giving our children varied, engaging and fun learning experiences.

With the sun shining, we went outside and explored the plants and flowers outside our classroom. The children were great at spotting buds and new spring growth and are looking forward to keeping an eye on our apple tree as it continues to grow and bloom, hopefully bearing lots of fruit. Moving into the sensory garden, the children examined the flowers, noticing how the colours and petals were so varied. They also noted the wide variety of colours, shapes and patterns they could see on the leaves. Finding some lemon mint and some fennel, they rubbed their fingers over them and enjoyed smelling the different scents. We even visited the office to look at their beautiful tulips on display there, before returning to the classroom to make a small sun-catcher with some of the leaves and flowers we had found. 🌿🪻

Sticks are such a fabulous resource! - not only are they free and reusable, they provide endless opportunities for developing skills and for fun, imaginative play. Today, the children painted some of our sticks, developing motor skills, language, turn-taking and exploring colour mixing. Once they had finished painting them, they washed them in some some warm soapy water, ready for use again next week. Lovely work, everyone! 😃
