Phonological and phonemic awareness are ESSENTIAL in learning to read! They are as important as knowing letter names and their sounds. Here’s some quick things to remember if you have an early reader:
Do:
✅play word games! In the car, in the tub, during dinner- anywhere! Even just 5-10 minutes of practice a day makes a huge impact. This can look like rhyming games, putting together and taking apart compound words, (then syllables, then sounds), asking: what’s the first/middle/last sound you hear in this word
✅Incorporate letter names (and the sounds they spell) into your phonemic awareness games
✅Make it fun and encourage every small gain!

Don’t:
🔴encourage/drill memorization of words
🔴Focus solely on letter names
🔴Make learning stressful or frustrating. Most early readers will shut down and eventually dislike reading if they find the learning stressful
