Whether working independently, as pairs, in small groups or large, these rising 1st-5th graders are wisely strengthening their literacy skills this summer before the new school year begins.

It was great visiting John Paulding today to see the school district's two week long Summer Literacy Program in action once again (now in it's 11th year).

Minority Mental Health Awareness Month

By Jasmyn Cuate, B.A.

July is recognized as Minority Mental Health Awareness Month! Named in honor of writer and mental health advocate Bebe Moore Campbell, whose work brought attention on how racial and cultural differences can make it difficult to access mental health services. This observance continues to raise awareness of the unique mental health challenges racial and ethnic minority groups face.

Barriers to Care

While mental health affects everyone, minority groups are less likely to seek mental health care due to challenges shaped by life experiences including:

-Stigma surrounding mental health

-Financial barriers or lack of insurance

-Language barriers

-Lack of diversity among mental health care providers

-Limited access to culturally responsive providers

-Racism or discrimination

-Historical distrust of health care systems

-Underdiagnosis and/or misdiagnosis

-Cultural beliefs about mental health and seeking treatment

These systemic barriers can make it challenging for minority groups to seek timely appropriate care, contributing to unequal mental health outcomes.

Why Awareness Matters

Minority Mental Health Month was established to bring attention to these systemic disparities and normalize conversations about mental health, help reduce stigma, promote early intervention, improve access to culturally competent care, and help communities advocate for better mental health resources. Understanding these differences can further support public health initiatives and policymakers design equitable solutions that ensure everyone can receive timely, appropriate mental health care, and unconditional support regardless of their race, ethnicity, or nationality.

Tips for Supporting Minority Mental Health

Check in with Yourself

Take time to notice your emotions, stress levels, and overall well-being. Burnout is a common phrase used to describe exhaustion. This can occur in our personal lives and our daily jobs. It is important to take breaks to protect your mental and emotional capacity.

Practice Self-Care

Self-care looks different for everyone. It might include spending time outdoors, journaling, exercising, listening to music, reading, engaging in spiritual practices, or connecting with your culture and traditions. Setting time aside to relax and practice self-care can help manage stress and increase energy.

Stay Connected with Your Support System

Isolation can worsen symptoms. Social support is a protective factor for mental health as it is shown to reduce stress and anxiety. Leaning on trusted friends, family members, and faith communities facing similar challenges can help normalize mental health, combating feelings of loneliness.

Seek Professional Help

Reaching out to a mental health professional is a sign of strength. Seek professional help if you are experiencing severe or distressing symptoms that have lasted 2 weeks or more. If possible, consider finding a provider with cultural competency as they can help recognize your unique challenges and understand your cultural background and experiences.

Health care professionals can help reduce disparities in many ways through cultural competency training, performing routine screenings for depression, and providing psychoeducation.

One of last summer's Changemakers participants called this program "life-changing" (in a good way 😉), so we are delighted to help another group of Sleepy Hollow students participate this year too! Read more below.

Our Changemakers students have arrived in Utah!

Joined by peers from Ossining and Peekskill, they'll be hiking, learning from one another, building new friendships, and taking in some incredible scenery.

This program is all about helping young women find their voice and lead with confidence, and this trip is a chance to put those skills into practice beyond the classroom.

We're so proud of these outstanding students and can't wait to hear about their adventures when they return! ...

The TT/SH Summer Camp has been going strong down at Pierson Park this year while WI undergoes some renovations.
Between swim days, field trips to the Maritime Aquarium, Powerhouse Studios and No Limit Ninja, arts & crafts, science exploration, and lots of playground fun, more than 100 young campers certainly are having a creative and busy summer.

Session 2 begins next week and there is still room for more campers, more scholarships and more counsellors too!

What a full circle moment!

In 2018 we first met Mia and her family when they participated in the Kids' Club supported AFHT Family Literacy Program.

And on Saturday we had the pleasure of reconnecting at Latino U College Access's graduation, where her plan to attend Yale University in the fall was shared and celebrated.

Congratulations and best wishes to Mia and her family on all of her academic success!
