Science Center announces leadership transition

The Sitka Sound Science Center has engaged Cape Decision Consulting, a Sitka-based firm, to provide interim leadership while the board conducts a search for a new Executive Director. Robin Sherman will be serving as interim Executive Director with responsibility for operations. Rob Allen will be providing support with community and partner relations, board development, and the search for a new executive.

Sherman is a Sitka resident with decades of experience in nonprofit organizations and local, state, and Tribal government. She has a bachelorʼs degree in environmental studies and masterʼs degrees in environmental policy and public administration. Allen is a lifetime resident of Sitka who has held a variety of leadership positions in the community, from President of Allen Marine Tours and CEO of Sitka Community Hospital to his most recent engagement as interim General Manager of Sitka Tribe of Alaska. He served on the Science Center Board of Directors for more than 10 years until 2024, including six years as chair.

The Science Center Board of Directors extends its heartfelt thanks to Arleigh Reynolds for his service in the Executive Director position and wishes him the best as he transitions into his planned retirement.

Globetrotter and science communicator extraordinaire, Lisa Busch visits the Netherlands!

Our former Executive Director, Lisa Busch, is traveling the world, building connections and making her impact known. She just finished giving a talk about community engagement in Zwolle, Netherlands, at Windesheim University.

The Science Center has had the privilege of hosting students from the project management program at Windesheim University during the last two spring sessions. Deanne Boisvert, former Sitkan and current faculty member, helped form the collaboration between the University and the Science Center. We’ve very much enjoyed the cultural exchange and hope to continue it into the future.

Salmon Fertilizer Distribution Day! 🌱🐟

Give your garden a boost with salmon meal! Join us at the Science Center on Sunday, September 20th from 10 AM–2 PM to collect salmon meal to use as a direct fertilizer for gardens and landscapes, a compost additive, or even mixed into pet food.

Curious how it’s made? Stop by at noon for a dehydrator loading and running demonstration!

The SSSC has Chum eggs available starting today at 4PM until tomorrow evening. Bring your own vessel and help yourself to the eggs in the tote (shown in the picture)!

We will also be hosting a salmon fertilizer distribution day on Sunday, September 20th from 10AM-2PM. Bring your own vessel to collect some salmon meal that can be used as a direct fertilizer for gardens and landscapes, a compost additive, or even mixed into pet food. There will be a dehydrator loading/running demonstration taking place at noon.

🐙 Growing by leaps and bounds! 🐙

Clementine, our resident giant Pacific octopus, has been living in the aquarium with us for over a year now. In that time shes learned to hunt crabs, pull open scallops, unscrew jars, had a full naming celebration, and grown over 100 times larger. She first came to us as a tiny little 20-gram cutie and is now weighing in at an impressive 2 Kilograms (about 4.5 lbs).

As she grows in size, she also grows in personality. Recently, aquarium staff are having a more adventurous time cleaning her tank as she pounces on tools, trying to wrestle them away. We look forward to seeing her continue to grow and surprise us.

Stop in Sunday- Thursday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, to visit her in person and ask about our membership perks.

This means that Sitka has experienced landslides with this rain level in the past.

What you can do now is review your emergency plan, find your “go bag” with emergency supplies, and consider leaving landslide-exposed areas.
