Dee Daniels guides students in the world of vocal jazz performance. We cover all ingredients of what it takes to become the consummate soloist.

The workshop, held every summer at the Sitka Fine Arts Camp in beautiful Sitka, AK, is geared towards the vocal soloist, and more specifically within the jazz genre. An empowering and interactive environment is immediately created where participants are made to feel comfortable and safe as they are guided out of their ‘comfort zones’ and encouraged to try new ideas. The curriculum is structured to lead participants on a journey of exploration that results in increased vocal and performance skills. Below is a partial list of topics to be presented during the workshop:

• vocal techniques created by Dee • personal grounding techniques / how to create with focused energy • phrasing / melodic & rhythmic exploration • listening: comparing and analyzing vocal styles • transposition & arranging • the art of storytelling - with and without words • choosing repertoire • the art of creating s**t • performance presentation: developing stage presence, getting the room into the palm of your hands, mic technique, command of body language, band interaction • vocalist responsibilities and jargon • a music business & marketing crash course • a video-taped public performance with the Native Jazz Trio with a review and critique the following day

On January 11, 2026, I will celebrate another birthday.

THIS ONE MATTERS!

Ten years ago, after surgery and during treatment for breast cancer, the songs that would become my CD THE PROMISE arrived uninvited, unplanned, and undeniable. They came through meditation and a depth of stillness I had never known before. I didn’t “write” them. I received them.

On March 22, 2020, I was diagnosed with liver cancer. After surgery on June 1, 2020, I was told no further treatment was necessary. Months later - just days before Christmas - a routine scan revealed that the cancer had metastasized.

On my birthday, January 11, 2021, I was told it was terminal. I was given options to prolong my life and timelines for when it would end. I chose none of them. I chose instead to remember who I am. I did not change my diet. I did not eliminate sugar. I did not take supplements. I did not cleanse, restrict, chase a cure, or become a warrior on a cancer battlefield. I did one thing: I reclaimed the power of I AM, and stood in it without negotiation.

Today, the cancer that once occupied my liver, abdominal wall, and both lungs no longer exists.

On January 11, 2026, I will mark five years completely cancer-free, and the beginning of the sixth year. To honor that day, I am not receiving gifts. I’m giving them. On that date, I will release one song from The Promise CD as a FREE DOWNLOAD on the 11th of every month, starting with the title track, The Promise. Each song will remain available throughout the year, and each is yours to share freely.

These songs were first a gift to me. Now, they are a gift to you.
