We weren't out looking for anything in particular — just walking. Then something small pulled our attention in, and the walk turned into a pause. There's a reason something like this is so easy to get lost in: psychologists call it 'soft fascination,' engaging enough to hold your focus, gentle enough to actually let your mind rest. That's the moment we try to catch before we ever open my journal. Come learn how we build noticing like this into every class. Follow us here and on the website.

We rode the Verde Canyon Railroad out of Clarkdale, Arizona — a 40-mile round trip along the Verde River, through red rock country, and into a 734-foot tunnel blasted through solid rock more than a hundred years ago. The open-air car gave us a 360-degree view the whole way; the indoor car gave us a break when we needed one. Allen spent most of the ride with his camera up. I spent most of it wishing I had six more hands for journaling and capturing moments. This is exactly the kind of setting we teach people to notice — the history under your feet doing half the writing before you even pick up a pen. Follow us here and on the website to learn how we turn a trip like this into a page.

This time of year, our sage plants get visitors — I think this one's a monarch, though I'm not confident enough to swear to it. A few bees joined in not long after, and nobody seemed bothered about sharing. Watching something like this for even a few minutes does something to your attention — psychologists call it 'soft fascination,' engaging enough to hold your focus, gentle enough to actually let your mind rest. Come learn how we turn small moments like this into journal pages. This peony started as a plain black-and-white photo — a pause page from 'Find Your Voice, Live Your Purpose.' Layer by layer, color builds it into something with real dimension: cool tones pull back, warm tones come forward, and the shadows are what actually make it pop off the page instead of sitting flat. I don't need to finish this in one sitting — that's the whole point of a pause page. I come back to it when I want a slow, hands-on stretch of time, and it's still here waiting exactly as I left it. Come learn the process behind pages like this. You don't need a dramatic view for this to work. Psychologists call it 'soft fascination' — natural surroundings that are engaging enough to hold your attention without demanding anything from you, which lets your mind actually rest. Palm trees, open grass, a little ocean barely visible in the distance — that's enough. Five minutes of noticing something like this is usually the best warm-up I know before opening a journal. Come learn how we build this into every class. Follow us here and head to the website to get the latest update on classes, publications, and posts.

I've watched and sketched abandoned buildings for as long as I can remember. There's something sad about them, but something beautiful, too — in the structure, the character, the way they hold on even as everything around them moves on. A windmill. An old storefront. A tree growing straight up through a brick silo nobody's used in decades. Sad, and stubborn, and still standing, asking for a second look. Come learn how we turn a feeling like this into a journal page. We continue to share here and on the Bound to Journal website. Some places light up more than the room. This glass factory in Cabo San Lucas is one of them — thick, heavy glass throwing color across the floors, walls, and ceiling until the whole space feels like it's glowing from somewhere else. Every piece here starts as recycled, lead-free glass, shaped by hand the same way it's been done for centuries — this factory was founded in 1990, uses recycled glass, and employs 30 artisans. Standing in the middle of all that light and color, it's hard not to feel something shift creatively. Come learn how we teach setting as part of the journaling practice, not just the backdrop. We spotted him from the pier — a sea turtle just floating with the current, drifting down, feeding on algae along the rocks, then floating back up to start again. No rush anywhere in it. We could have watched him for hours, and honestly, we almost did.

This lighthouse deserved a better drawing than the one I gave it. But that was never really the assignment. A rough scribble on a rock at Lake Superior does something a perfect sketch never could — it remembers the wind, the cold rock under me, Allen walking toward me before I even noticed. That's the whole idea behind how we teach this: the page doesn't need to be good. It needs to be honest. Come learn the process with us.
