Can you imagine not knowing if you’ll have enough money to buy your baby diapers or formula? With all the worries that come along with being a parent, many of us are blessed to not have to worry about those “little” things. Still, for countless families in the Siouxland community, stressors like a tight budget and the growing expense of having a little one become barriers to being good parents. Th

at’s why ABC9 (KCAU-TV) launched Stuff the Stroller four years ago. Jenna Rehnstrom was pregnant with her second child and our General Manager, John Curry, came up with the idea to throw Siouxland a baby shower in her honor. His idea to pay it forward has become a successful and meaningful opportunity for our TV station to collect donations of baby items that are given to Siouxland parents through the Crittenton Center’s programs. The Crittenton Center serves families in a wide-range of ways, from the Stella Sanford Daycare and preschool programs to the West High Infant Center where students can take their kids and still complete their education. Our Stuff the Stroller drive also benefits the Crittenton Center’s HOPES Program. HOPES stands for Healthy Opportunities for Families to Experience Success. Crittenton Center staff goes into homes of HOPES participants and teaches everything from parental coping skills to the proper way to bathe a baby. The education and connections parents gain relieves stress and enhances their self-worth, making them better moms and dads. Participants can also earn free baby necessities, which is where many of the Stuff the Stroller donations are used. The Crittenton Center Resource Center also benefits from the donation drive. Serving families whose income is zero to $10,000 a year, the Resource Center offers parent support and education classes. Participants in those classes can also earn items like diapers, formula, bottles and other baby supplies they might need. How do we collect these crucial items and help local families in need? That’s where you come in. During the month of May, we’ve teamed up with UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s and local Hy-Vee stores to collect donations of any new items essential for babies. That includes diapers, wipes, formula (Similac), bottles, burp rags, blankets, clothes, diaper rash cream, teething toys, and pacifiers. Anything your child or grandchild needed during the first few years of life can be put to good use.

What an incredible first night of our Stuff the Stroller drive! People in Le Mars were all so kind and incredibly generous! We left with 3 carts overflowing with baby items. It’s a great start to our goal of filling our studio with diapers, wipes and more over the next few weeks!
