🛑 If your child is guessing at words, looking away from the page, or skipping little words like “the,” “for,” or “to”… they’re not “reading.”
They’re using compensatory strategies — and those strategies are wiring their brain the wrong way.
This 26-minute video explains exactly how it happens:

Why kids invent 7 sneaky guessing habits
How those habits become neurologically entrenched (literally “first nature”)
The 4 points where reading instruction usually fails
Clear red-flag signs your child is stuck in this cycle
Exactly how to stop it before it’s permanent

Based on the Science of Reading and what I’ve seen working with hundreds of struggling readers.
If your child (or a student) is fighting to read, this may be the most important 26 minutes you spend this week.

🚨 Stop teaching sight words by sight!
In this eye-opening 31-minute video, I demonstrate the famous Cambridge reading effect and Stroop test that prove words are NOT memorized visually.
Discover why "whole word" memorization can hold kids back — and learn the Science of Reading solution: orthographic mapping and how to use Elkonin boxes (sound boxes) effectively.
Perfect for teachers and homeschool parents who want to build strong, confident readers through proper phonics and sound mapping instead of guessing.

Parents and teachers — this one might surprise you.

Right now, only about 31–33% of 4th graders read proficiently nationwide. That’s a crisis.

But in Steubenville, Ohio — a high-poverty Rust Belt town — third graders have hit 93–100% proficiency for nearly 20 years. Many years it’s 98–99% or even 100% across income levels and student groups.

So what’s the difference? Is it that most struggling readers have dyslexia?

In my new video essay, I break it down clearly for anyone who cares about kids’ futures:

We look at two definitions of dyslexia (Kilpatrick broad + Shaywitz narrow), what “reading failure” really means, the hard national data, and why Steubenville proves that **instruction** is the deciding factor — not the child.

Experts like Louisa Moats, the National Reading Panel, and Siegfried Engelmann have shown for years that **95–99% of children can learn to read proficiently** with the right teaching.

If you’re tired of hearing that reading struggles are mostly “dyslexia” or “the kid’s fault,” watch this.

Embedded phonics is specifically discouraged by the Science of Reading. They encourage explicit, systematic phonics. Embedded phonics is no better than whole language, according to the National Reading Panel. Shame on you.

🎩Here is the secret sauce

Research tells us that using pictures in the shape of a letter that also starts with the letter's main sound can help kids learn their letters and sounds FASTER!

🧠 In a 2009 study by Ehri & Schmidman, they found that kids learning letters with embedded mnemonics mastered them faster, retained them better, and even reduced letter confusion!

There are other studies that also show the benefits of using embedded mnemonics. Comment ABC and I will send you a link to my website where I talk about the research and provide resources for teaching the alphabet with embedded mnemonics!

My embedded mnemonics alphabet also includes correct key words such as EDGE for E and AX for X.

🐙Say OCTOPUS in the comments to learn more!!!

While I like to share research to support what I say, I also want to add that I have personally taught kids the alphabet with my embedded mnemonics pictures and have seen such a difference! These pictures also help them learn to the letter and the sound at the same time (which is also supported by research) and fast tracks their learning!

Have you tried these yet?? Let me know in the comments!

Is the "wait and see" approach to reading struggles costing your family?

Many parents don't realize that delaying intervention can lead to an average of $10,000+ in remediation costs down the road. More importantly, it comes at a huge psychological cost to a child's confidence.

In my new video, I break down the real costs of waiting and explain the simple, preventative steps you can take to ensure your child's success from the start.

When parents think of a "hard" language, Mandarin is often at the top of the list. But what if that's a myth?

Our new blog post makes a surprising but true claim: for an English speaker focused on learning to speak, Mandarin is grammatically far simpler than Spanish. We compare the verb "to eat" in both languages—in Mandarin, it's one word. In Spanish, it's a list of over 100 conjugations.

Discover why the lack of tenses, genders, and conjugations makes Mandarin an incredibly efficient language to start speaking, and how you can become conversational in a fraction of the time you might expect.

It’s a running joke for a reason. You spend a year in a language class and all you can say is, "My sister has a yellow pencil." Why does this happen?

Our latest blog post dives into a fundamental flaw in how languages are often taught: an over-emphasis on memorizing lists of low-utility nouns at the expense of learning the powerful, functional structure of the language. Discover why learning words like "that," "go," and "with" is far more important for beginners than learning the word for "whale," and how a focus on structure can unlock true communication in weeks, not years.
