Chicks!
We can read all the books and look at all the pictures in the world, but nothing compares to the sensory magic of real-life experiences. Seeing the soft yellow feathers bounce, hearing those tiny chirps, and feeling the warmth of a living creature in their hands changes everything.

When children touch and see things in the real world, their brains fire in entirely new ways. They don't just look—they wonder.
"How do they talk to their mommies?"
"Why are their feet so scratchy?"
"Do they sleep like we do?"

Real-life experiences build a rich vocabulary and spark a deep, organic curiosity about the world around them. These are the moments where true lifelong learners are born!

We were working on Mother's Day gifts today! Look at those little fingers working the scissors. Cutting is a great way to strengthen writing skills! Scissors also strengthen the Growth Mindset. The kids learn that mistakes are okay and we can keep trying.

There’s something truly special about watching the "big kids" step into the role of mentors. In a mixed-age family childcare setting, we see beautiful moments like this every day: two 5-year-olds cheering on and physically guiding a 3-year-old through our backyard obstacle course.

Why does this matter?

Building Leadership: Our older children learn to adapt their communication, practice patience, and experience the responsibility of being a role model.

Building Confidence: For the younger ones, watching "the big kids" makes new challenges feel achievable. They have peer-mentors to look up to and learn from through observation.

Social-Emotional Growth: Mixed-age groups mirror real-world dynamics. It fosters a sense of family and community where everyone has a unique role, regardless of their age.

Math becomes a hands-on adventure at Journey Preschool! Today, we took our learning off the page and onto the floor using two of our favorite tools: dice and magnet numbers.

​Watching our little learners connect the dots on a die to a physical numeral is where the magic happens. This simple game builds:

​Subitizing Skills: Learning to "see" how many dots are on a die without counting them one by one.

​Number Recognition: Matching quantities to their magnet number partners.

​Fine Motor Strength: Picking up, rolling, and sticking magnets to the board.

​Try it at home: Grab a pair of dice and some fridge magnets! Roll the dice together, count the dots, and "race" to find the matching magnet.
